Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) ? Micron Technology Inc. will probably emerge as the top winner from the bankruptcy of Elpida Memory Inc., whose filing yesterday sidelines the last Japanese maker of computer memory chips and gives rivals the chance to scoop up factories on the cheap.
Elpida filed for Japan?s biggest bankruptcy in two years after chip prices plunged and it failed to win a second government bailout. The elimination of a top maker of dynamic random access memory would give the rest of the industry more control over production, helping to ease the price swings that have left Micron unprofitable for six of the past 10 years.
Elpida?s creditors will look for ways to recoup losses through the sale of such assets as a plant in Hiroshima valued at $1 billion by Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. For potential buyers such as Micron, that price tag would be about a fifth of the cost of building a new equivalent facility. That would fit with Micron?s strategy of trying to buy up capacity cheaply, rather than making acquisitions that outstrip the company?s $1.9 billion in cash and compel it to take on debt.
?Micron is clearly the winner,? said Dan Berenbaum, a New York-based analyst at MKM Partners LP. ?Now it?s a question of how much does Micron pay for the assets.?
Micron shares jumped 7.7 percent yesterday amid speculation that the company, the fourth-largest DRAM maker, might seek to acquire some of Elpida?s plants. Dan Francisco, a spokesman for Boise, Idaho-based Micron, declined to comment.
Elpida has facilities that are responsible for about 18 percent of DRAM industry output, making it the No. 3 supplier. A push to take the plants offline or use them for other kinds of chips would help ease oversupply and stem industrywide losses.
Falling Demand
The computer-memory industry has been grappling with a decline in demand, brought on by a global consumer shift to smartphones and tablet computers, which need less memory and typically use a different type of chip.
Elpida?s troubles were exacerbated by DRAM prices falling below the cost of production. Industry sales last year dropped 26 percent to $29.2 billion, according to an estimate by Gartner Inc. That followed a 72 percent surge in 2010.
The Japanese chipmaker was the product of a 1999 merger between the memory businesses of NEC Corp. and Hitachi Ltd., which exited the industry.
?Ten-Foot Pole?
If Micron makes a bid for some DRAM facilities, Elpida?s creditors will get an offer that?s ?tough to swallow,? because the U.S. company knows it?s not likely to face any competition, said Hans Mosesmann, an analyst at Raymond James & Associates Inc.
?Nobody else is going to touch DRAM with a ten-foot pole,? said Mosesmann, who has a ?strong buy? rating on Micron shares. ?Micron is very practical. They don?t want all of Elpida.?
Earlier this month, Micron?s management told Mosesmann and other analysts the company is monitoring events in Japan to see if there are opportunities. Executives declined to comment on whether Elpida is one of them and what the company might do.
?It just doesn?t feel like there?s going to be any fresh capital put into the DRAM business,? Micron President Mark Adams said in an interview on Feb. 9. ?If we?re right, then the industry is mature enough that consolidation could make a lot of sense.?
Elpida has total debt of about $4 billion and has reported five straight quarters of losses. Micron, which has been making acquisitions and driving industry consolidation for more than 10 years, has about $1.95 billion of debt, approximately equal to its cash reserves. The company has a target range for its debt- to-capital ratio of 20 percent to 25 percent. Its current cash plus market capital of $8.4 billion give it a debt-to-capital ratio of about 18 percent, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Debt Guidelines
If Micron stays within those guidelines ? giving it the latitude to borrow about another $500 million ? it?s not going to have enough leeway to buy its Japanese rival, said Daniel Amir, a San Francisco-based analyst at Lazard Capital Markets LLC.
?They probably won?t just buy out Elpida,? Amir said. ?They are not willing to break the bank. It?s not like they?re going to spend $2 billion.?
Samsung Electronics Co., which dominates the memory-chip business and is the only consistently profitable company in the industry, has said it will concentrate on running its own business, making it an unlikely bidder for Elpida?s assets.
?Samsung is not going to come to their rescue,? said Raymond James?s Mosesmann.
Profit Struggle
Excluding Samsung ? which is also the world?s second- largest maker of mobile phones and the biggest maker of liquid crystal displays ? DRAM makers have struggled to make money.
Matching supply with demand poses a constant challenge in the market for DRAM for personal computers, where plants take years to come online and can?t be shut down cheaply. With factories costing billions of dollars to build, companies such as Elpida have found themselves facing debts they have trouble repaying.
In six of the past 10 years, industry companies have spent more cash than their operations have generated. Even including Samsung, whose share price has more than tripled, memory makers as a group have lost 40 percent of their market value since October 2002.
If output from Elpida?s plants is slowed down or halted, all of its rivals will benefit as supply gets closer to demand and prices stabilize, according to Shawn Webster, an analyst at Macquarie Capital USA Inc.
?Any time a competitor is in distress, it?s a positive for everybody else,? said Webster. ?If you pull supply offline, that could help everybody in the DRAM industry.?
Micron CEO
Earlier this month, Micron lost longtime Chief Executive Officer Steve Appleton, who died in a plane crash. Mosesmann and other analysts speculated that his death might slow any possible negotiations for industry consolidation, because Appleton had been the driving force behind previous transactions.
Micron, which got its start with an investment from local potato magnate J.R. Simplot, became one of the largest makers of computer memory when it bought the memory operations of Texas Instruments Inc. in 1998. Since then, it has acquired plants from Toshiba Corp., bought control of a Japanese joint venture, and formed partnerships with Taiwan?s Nanya Technology Corp. and Intel Corp. to secure access to more production.
In 2008, as Germany?s Qimonda AG headed for bankruptcy and sought investments, Micron bought out its interest in Inotera Memories Inc. Qimonda subsequently went out of business, and its chipmaking equipment was sold off.
Micron has also walked away from opportunities. In April 2002, it abandoned a transaction under which it would have acquired the memory operations of South Korea?s Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the second-largest DRAM maker, after the companies couldn?t agree on terms.
?In No Rush?
One way that Micron might consider a purchase of Elpida would be if it could get cheap financing for a transaction from Elpida?s creditors, which are facing the dilemma of knowing that restructuring the company?s debt wouldn?t be enough to make it competitive again, according to Betsy Van Hees, a San Francisco- based analyst at Wedbush Securities. Elpida needs more money to invest in making its production more efficient, she said.
When asked on Feb. 10 whether he would take Micron?s debt level above 25 percent of its capital to make an acquisition that would consolidate the industry, Chief Executive Officer Mark Durcan told analysts he was going to be ?very careful about putting the company in a position where we?re not confident we can deal with any additional debt.?
Still, he would consider taking the debt ratio higher if there was a good enough opportunity, he said.
?If they can get the current creditors to finance the deal at a very low interest rate, then it might make sense,? said Van Hees. Unless that happens, ?they are in no rush to do anything.?

My journey of motherhood is quite challenging as it needs more patience and understanding, and yet fun. I love my children very much that I am willing to do whatever it takes to have more patience and determination of how to raise them to be a better person. In my entire life, I have never thought that I would be raising children until I get old, and not to mention with the four kids. Having that many kids quite a handful but also fulfilling.
It is indeed a full time job as you have to watch them 24/7 and make sure that they are okay, get everything they need and well fed. There are times that I get so mad at them especially when they do something bad, but I told myself that they are just kids who make mistakes just like adults. So I?ve tried really hard not to yell at them and talk to them calmly the best I could. I tried so hard to minimize our household schedule so we all could spend time together as a family and let the kids play during weekends. They deserve to enjoy themselves for they are still kids. And also I am taking the opportunity to enjoy with the children while they are still little. They are the reason why I become a SHAM and who always keep me so busy. A full time job that is.
Anyway, before when it was just the two of us, I used to think about work all the time as I was working full time-a real job. But now that we have the four kids, getting a job it never cross my mind just yet as I couldn?t afford to leave them behind. I just couldn?t simply get a job and worries about my children being left at home while the husband is at work. For sure I will be going back to work when the time is right and the children would be old enough that they would be able to take care of themselves. Right now I only think of how we would be able to raise them and give them a good life they deserve. I so love our wonderful children dearly. My family is my world. The love of my life!!!

Light-emitting nanocrystal diodes go ultraviolet
ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? A multinational team of scientists has developed a process for creating glass-based, inorganic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that produce light in the ultraviolet range. The work, reported this week in the online Nature Communications, is a step toward biomedical devices with active components made from nanostructured systems.
LEDs based on solution-processed inorganic nanocrystals have promise for use in environmental and biomedical diagnostics, because they are cheap to produce, robust, and chemically stable. But development has been hampered by the difficulty of achieving ultraviolet emission. In their paper, Los Alamos National Laboratory's Sergio Brovelli in collaboration with the research team lead by Alberto Paleari at the University of Milano-Bicocca in Italy describe a fabrication process that overcomes this problem and opens the way for integration in a variety of applications.
The world needs light-emitting devices that can be applied in biomedical diagnostics and medicine, Brovelli said, either as active lab-on-chip diagnostic platforms or as light sources that can be implanted into the body to trigger some photochemical reactions. Such devices could, for example, selectively activate light-sensitive drugs for better medical treatment or probe for the presence of fluorescent markers in medical diagnostics. These materials would need to be fabricated cheaply, on a large scale, and integrated into existing technology.
The paper describes a new glass-based material, able to emit light in the ultraviolet spectrum, and be integrated onto silicon chips that are the principal components of current electronic technologies.
The new devices are inorganic and combine the chemical inertness and mechanical stability of glass with the property of electric conductivity and electroluminescence (i.e. the ability of a material to emit light in response to the passage of an electric current). As a result, they can be used in harsh environments, such as for immersion into physiologic solutions, or by implantation directly into the body. This was made possible by designing a new synthesis strategy that allows fabrication of all inorganic LEDs via a wet-chemistry approach, i.e. a series of simple chemical reactions in a beaker. Importantly, this approach is scalable to industrial quantities with a very low start-up cost. Finally, they emit in the ultraviolet region thanks to careful design of the nanocrystals embedded in the glass.
In traditional light-emitting diodes, light emission occurs at the sharp interface between two semiconductors. The oxide-in-oxide design used here is different, as it allows production of a material that behaves as an ensemble of semiconductor junctions distributed in the glass. This new concept is based on a collection of the most advanced strategies in nanocrystal science, combining the advantages of nanometric materials consisting of more than one component. In this case the active part of the device consists of tin dioxide nanocrystals covered with a shell of tin monoxide embedded in standard glass: by tuning the shell thickness is it possible to control the electrical response of the whole material.

Recording and Editing videos on iPhone4S is quick and great ...

I like video recording and I'm trying to post every now and then a useful video with some productivity tips and tricks on my?Productive! Magazine Show?page. The only problem with frequent posting is how much time it takes to record and edit a video... or at least it used to take :-)
The problem with HD quality
When I discovered I could record HD movies on the iPhone I was thrilled about that... but my Mac wasn't. Importing a huge close-to-a-gig-in-size file to my iMovie app on my Macbook Air took lots of time... and later editing it took even more... and as video editing is not my "core business" it annoyed me how much time it takes for me. Yet I still wanted the videos to feel personal and not to be done by some professional. And I wanted them in HD.
iMovie on the iPhone to the rescue.
I watched a?great video by VidCaster CEO Kieran Farr?where he explains that editing is not just my problem. It's everyone's problem and we should strive to edit less and preferably not edit at all. He also mentioned iMovie on the iPhone as a quick way to edit videos without actually moving the clips in raw and importing to a desktop app. I love simplicity and time saving... so I gave it a try.My daughter is dancing!
To check it out I took three clips of my daughter dancing on my iPhone and imported them to the iMovie. Editing personal videos is even more painful than my "professional" ones. It was too easy. From three 5-minute clips I quickly compiled a short 4-minute video of my daughter's best moves. It took me 15 minutes of editing time. Fairly quick, especially for my first time with iMovie on the iPhone's small screen. The iPhone 4S is pretty darn fast and handles iMovie really well.
Intro and outro
To make my "Productive Magazine Shows" really professional I took some old clips and compiled quickly a short intro and outro that would accompany all of my future videos. 3-sec intro and 5-sec outro. Then I had to export it to my iPhone so that these clips would be available in my iMovie. I had to transfer these clips to iPhoto and in iTunes make sure the option to "transfer videos" is set to "on". After a sync I had both clips ready to mix :-)3 episodes of my show recorded and edited in... 1.5 hours!
Wow, that was quick. I recorded three episodes and edited them on my iPhone in only one and a half hours! And I had several takes of each episode so it wasn't all that easy, but editing the shows in iMovie was really painless. Tomorrow I'm posting the first show about my stand-up desk experience.
Overall I'm amazed my iPhone became my fully-fledged Video Studio and enables joyful video recording and editing that takes less time and delivers fantastic results. Steve Jobs was really right - this device is truly amazing :-)

New mouse reference library should speed gene discoveries
ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? Genetic information provided by a large group of specially-designed mice could pave the way to faster human health discoveries and transform the ways people battle and prevent disease.
In 15 papers published Feb. 16 in the Genetics Society of America journals Genetics and G3:Genes/Genomes/Genetics, researchers from North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The Jackson Laboratory and other universities and labs across the globe highlight a new genetic resource that could aid development of more effective treatments for any number of human diseases.
The resource, known as the Collaborative Cross (CC), is a reference manual of genetic variation contained in hundreds of specially-bred mice and their genetic sequences. The CC mice have much more genetic variation than normal lab mice, and thus more closely mirror the genetic complexity found in humans.
Moreover, the mice and their genetic sequences will be publicly available, allowing researchers around the world to work with mice that have particular genetic variations.
"If you can't mimic the genetic variation in people, you can't necessarily use mouse findings to understand more about human disease," says Dr. David Threadgill, professor and department head of genetics at NC State who originally proposed the idea for the CC project a decade ago and who serves as one of the project leaders. Threadgill is also a member of the University of North Carolina's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Threadgill developed the idea for the CC in order to harness the power of so-called whole genome studies that examine all genes at once instead of subsets of genes. Complex interactions between large numbers of genes frequently govern traits and behavior. Learning more about these interactions could help researchers tease out links between certain genes and certain diseases, for example.
In one of the 15 papers, Threadgill and corresponding author Dr. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, identify key genes involved in red and white blood cell counts and red blood cell volume. These hematological parameters are important indicators of health and disease.
Project leaders include Dr. Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena of the UNC Department of Genetics, who is a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Dr. Gary Churchill at The Jackson Laboratory. The international consortium participating in the development of the CC project includes NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill, The Jackson Laboratory, Tel Aviv University, Oxford University and Geniad/Australia. The mice are housed and "curated" at UNC-Chapel Hill.
The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health; Ellison Medical Foundation; National Science Foundation; Australian Research Council; and the Wellcome Trust. The University Cancer Research Fund from the state of North Carolina also provided important funding.

Santorum revels in sudden support ? but how deep? (AP)
BOISE, Idaho. ? The latest Republican to surge in polls, Rick Santorum is trying to turn his newfound strength into something lasting.
Curious Republicans now pack his rallies. Supporters have funneled nearly $4 million to his formerly empty campaign account over the past seven days. And his staff is plotting an aggressive strategy to challenge Mitt Romney in Romney's native Michigan and beyond.
But things don't look so strong just beneath the surface.
Santorum is underfunded and outmanned. He's still lacking in organization, a month and a half into the primary season. And, after he won three contests in a single day last week, his opponents ? on the right and the left ? have begun their own efforts to tear him down.
An upbeat Santorum declared "We're building" in a brief interview in Tacoma, Wash., on Tuesday before heading to Idaho for campaign events. "We've got a great volunteer base. In some states we're going to have staff. Other states we aren't. We're going to use volunteers."
His challenges were on display this week in Tacoma, where hundreds of supporters waited on cold, wet cement stairs in the dark to see the Republican presidential candidate with whom they're barely familiar.
"I don't know a lot about him, except I know he's more conservative than some of the other candidates like Mitt Romney," said Tanya Franklin, a 54-year-old airline reservationist, who says she'll probably vote for Santorum in her state's March 3 caucuses.
The former Pennsylvania senator has surged to a virtual tie with Romney in nationwide polling following his surprising sweep in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri last week. But, as Franklin suggests, his popularity may have less to do with who he is than who he isn't. Santorum is not Romney. And with Newt Gingrich's recent decline, that's enough for some conservatives ? at least for now.
Santorum had 30 percent support to 28 percent for Romney in a national poll released this week by the Pew Research Center. But the same poll said 31 percent of all adults had never heard of or couldn't rate him. That's a significantly higher number than for Romney, Gingrich, or Ron Paul. Even among Republicans, one in five told Pew they didn't know enough about Santorum to rate him.
Romney and others are now working to make sure that changes.
The long-time front-runner for the nomination, Romney has deployed surrogates such as a former Santorum Senate colleague, Jim Talent of Missouri, to attack Santorum's support for earmarks in Congress. The conservative Club for Growth has been equally critical. And Romney has been aggressive on the campaign trail, suggesting in recent days that Santorum and Gingrich represent the kind of overspending Washington insiders the tea party abhors.
At the same time, left-leaning groups such as the Center For American Progress and Emily's List are going after Santorum's comments on women. A staunch social conservative, Santorum has been critical of women serving in combat and sometimes in the workplace.
"Sadly the propaganda campaign launched in the 1960s has taken root," reads a passage in Santorum's book. "The radical feminists succeeded in undermining the traditional family and convincing women that professional accomplishments are the key to happiness."
"These things that Rick Santorum is attacking are broadly supported by women and American families," said Tara McGuinness of the Center for American Progress. "It isn't 1952. Most American families have two working parents."
Santorum says he's not going to sit back and just take such shots.
On Tuesday, he began running ads on Fox News Channel in Michigan. It was a signal to supporters ? and to donors ? that Santorum planned to contest the state where Romney grew up and his father served as governor.
Look for Santorum to emphasize his message on manufacturing revival, especially in hard-hit Michigan. He plans a Thursday economic speech in Detroit, and his advisers see an opening to use Romney's words against him ? especially Romney's 2008 New York Times op-ed titled "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt."
Sensing vulnerability, Romney tried to pre-empt that in an op-ed Tuesday in The Detroit News. He argued that the government should sell its share in automakers and return the profits to taxpayers.
At the same time, Santorum's advisers are bracing for an onslaught from Romney. They were largely spared in the last trio of states ? Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado.
"We fully expect his search-and-destroy methods to be put on display. That's his M.O.: instead of focusing on his own record, their first inclination is to tear down his opponent," said Hogan Gidley, Santorum's communications chief.
But there are limits to what Santorum's little team can do.
He refuses to hire a pollster and pledges to campaign from his gut. He has brought on veterans from Mike Huckabee's orbit, including the top spokeswoman for Huckabee's 2008 presidential bid and Michele Bachmann's 2012 race. Other aides, too, are coming aboard as Santorum's strategy meetings have grown from just one state to a handful of competitive races.
Yet he lacks a headquarters to have those meetings. Often, Santorum's top aides confer over conference calls or Skype.
The disorganization caused problems at the Tacoma event, which was held at an outdoor venue adjacent to a camp site of the local Occupy protesters. Lacking the staff to handle such logistics on his own, Santorum had left the planning to the state GOP.
A confident Santorum took the stage as supporters chanted, "We pick Rick!"
"You have very good taste. Thank you," Santorum responded.
But in a matter of minutes, his supporters were overshadowed by shouting from liberal protesters who packed the event. Two were dragged away by police in the midst of his speech.
A week after his trio of victories, Santorum said he's raised nearly $4 million since then and expects to hit that mark soon.
Romney, by contrast, averaged more than $2 million a week over the last three months of 2011. Santorum raised less than $1 million over the entire quarter.
It's unclear how long Romney will wait to take an anti-Santorum message to the airwaves. His allies with the Restore Our Future super PAC already have bought time in several states and plan to go after Santorum aggressively.
Romney aides point to three vulnerabilities beyond Santorum's support for some earmarks.
They note that Santorum was one of a handful of Republicans who voted to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the federal circuit court in 1998. Sotomayor was nominated by President Barack Obama, and confirmed by the Senate, to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2009.
Santorum also faced criticism during the New Hampshire and South Carolina primary campaigns for opposing right-to-work legislation, an issue Romney aides expect to re-emerge.
They also expect Santorum's endorsement of then-Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter over Rep. Pat Toomey in the 2004 GOP Senate primary to become an issue. Santorum said in a video appeal for Specter, a social moderate, that the senior Republican senator was "with us on the votes that matter." In 2009, Specter changed his party affiliation to Democrat.
Gingrich won't make things easier for Santorum either.
Despite falling in the polls, the former House speaker says he's the strongest Romney alternative.
The National Review, an influential conservative magazine, published an editorial calling on Gingrich to step aside and endorse Santorum. But Gingrich this week called the article "silly" and said he had no intention of abandoning the race.

Researchers find China's pollution related to E-cars may be more harmful than gasoline cars
Monday, February 13, 2012Electric cars have been heralded as environmentally friendly, but findings from University of Tennessee, Knoxville, researchers show that electric cars in China have an overall impact on pollution that could be more harmful to health than gasoline vehicles.
Chris Cherry, assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering, and graduate student Shuguang Ji, analyzed the emissions and environmental health impacts of five vehicle technologies in 34 major Chinese cities, focusing on dangerous fine particles. What Cherry and his team found defies conventional logic: electric cars cause much more overall harmful particulate matter pollution than gasoline cars.
"An implicit assumption has been that air quality and health impacts are lower for electric vehicles than for conventional vehicles," Cherry said. "Our findings challenge that by comparing what is emitted by vehicle use to what people are actually exposed to. Prior studies have only examined environmental impacts by comparing emission factors or greenhouse gas emissions."
Particulate matter includes acids, organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles. It is also generated through the combustion of fossil fuels.
For electric vehicles, combustion emissions occur where electricity is generated rather than where the vehicle is used. In China, 85 percent of electricity production is from fossil fuels, about 90 percent of that is from coal. The authors discovered that the power generated in China to operate electric vehicles emit fine particles at a much higher rate than gasoline vehicles. However, because the emissions related to the electric vehicles often come from power plants located away from population centers, people breathe in the emissions a lower rate than they do emissions from conventional vehicles.
Still, the rate isn't low enough to level the playing field between the vehicles. In terms of air pollution impacts, electric cars are more harmful to public health per kilometer traveled in China than conventional vehicles.
"The study emphasizes that electric vehicles are attractive if they are powered by a clean energy source," Cherry said."In China and elsewhere, it is important to focus on deploying electric vehicles in cities with cleaner electricity generation and focusing on improving emissions controls in higher polluting power sectors."
The researchers estimated health impacts in China using overall emission data and emission rates from literature for five vehicle types?gasoline and diesel cars, diesel buses, e-bikes and e-cars?and then calculated the proportion of emissions inhaled by the population.
E-cars' impact was lower than diesel cars but equal to diesel buses. E-bikes yielded the lowest environmental health impacts per passenger per kilometer.
"Our calculations show that an increase in electric bike usage improves air quality and environmental health by displacing the use of other more polluting modes of transportation," Cherry said. "E-bikes, which are battery-powered, continue to be an environmentally friendly and efficient mode of transportation."
The findings also highlight the importance of considering exposures and the proximity of emissions to people when evaluating environmental health impacts for electric vehicles. They also illuminate the distributional impact of moving pollution out of cities. For electric vehicles, about half of the urban emissions are inhaled by rural populations, who generally have lower incomes.
The findings are published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.
Cherry worked with Matthew Bechle and Julian Marshall from the University of Minnesota and Ye Wu from Tsinghua University in Beijing. The scientists conducted their study in China because of the popularity of e-bikes and e-cars and the country's rapid growth. Electric vehicles in China outnumber conventional vehicles 2:1. E-bikes in China are the single largest adoption of alternative fuel vehicles in history, with over 100 million vehicles purchased in the past decade, more than all other countries combined.
