RICHMOND, Va. (March 30, 2012) Man's best friend may make a positive difference in the workplace by reducing stress and making the job more satisfying for other employees, according to a Virginia Commonwealth University study.
Stress is a major contributor to employee absenteeism, morale and burnout and results in significant loss of productivity and resources. But a preliminary study, published in the March issue of the International Journal of Workplace Health Management, found that dogs in the workplace may buffer the impact of stress during the workday for their owners and make the job more satisfying for those with whom they come into contact.
The VCU researchers compared employees who bring their dogs to work, employees who do not bring their dogs to work and employees without pets in the areas of stress, job satisfaction, organizational commitment and support.
"Although preliminary, this study provides the first quantitative study of the effects of employees' pet dogs in the workplace setting on employee stress, job satisfaction, support and commitment," said principal investigator Randolph T. Barker, Ph.D., professor of management in the VCU School of Business.
"Dogs in the workplace can make a positive difference," he said. "The differences in perceived stress between days the dog was present and absent were significant. The employees as a whole had higher job satisfaction than industry norms."
The study took place at Replacements, Ltd., a service-manufacturing-retail company located in Greensboro, N.C., which employs approximately 550 people. Approximately 20 to 30 dogs are on the company premises each day. The study took place over a period of one work week in the company setting, during which time participants completed surveys and collected saliva samples. Pagers were assigned to prompt employees to complete surveys during the day.
The researchers did not observe a difference between the three employee groups on stress hormone levels, which was measured via a saliva sample, in the morning, but during the course of the work day, self-reported stress declined for employees with their dogs present and increased for non-pet owners and dog owners who did not bring their dogs to work. The team noted that stress significantly rose during the day when owners left their dogs at home compared to days they brought them to work.
According to Barker, the team observed unique dog-related communication in the workplace that may contribute to employee performance and satisfaction. For example, he said, although not part of the study, that employees without a dog were observed requesting to take a co-worker's dog out on a break. These were brief, positive exchanges as the dogs were taken and returned and also resulted in an employee break involving exercise.
Barker said that other findings revealed mostly positive comments from employees such as "pets in the workplace can be a great bonus for employee morale ," "having dogs here is great stress relief" and "dogs are positive; dogs increase coworker cooperation."
"The effect of pets in reducing the impact of stress and enhancing communication found in other settings may extend to the workplace," said Barker.
"Pet presence may serve as a low-cost, wellness intervention readily available to many organizations and may enhance organizational satisfaction and perceptions of support. Of course, it is important to have policies in place to ensure only friendly, clean and well-behaved pets are present in the workplace," he said.
According to Barker, further research with larger sample sizes within the organizational setting is needed to replicate the findings of this initial study.

On a JetBlue flight from New York to Las Vegas yesterday, a group of passengers were forced to band together and subdue Clayton Osbon, a pilot who simply flipped out, behaving erratically, banging on the cockpit door and screaming out numbers.
On his radio show this morning, meanwhile, Carson Daly referenced the incident.
"Most of the people were on their way to some sort of security conference in Las Vegas," he said. "It was like a bunch of dudes and well trained dudes... thank God."
The Voice host then added, laughing: "With my luck, it would be like... 'this is the flight going to [the gay pride parade] in San Francisco,'" changing his tone to sound more effeminate and saying: "Uh, we're headed down to Vegas for the floral convention."
The implication, naturally? Folks such as that would not have been able to bring down the JetBlue pilot.
A few hours after making the comments, Daly Tweeted an apology: "This morning on my radio show I attempted to make fun of myself & offended others by mistake. I sincerely apologize."

Kentucky has successfully won a suit against 141 gambling domains A four year lawsuit against one hundred and forty one online gambling domains has finally ended in the favor of the commonwealth of Kentucky. One hundred and thirty two domains are to be forfeited to the state with the remainder, such as Poker Stars, Full Tilt and Absolute Poker, who offer poker andonline blackjack games, already undergoing a case with the US Department of Justice.

The case, which began in 2008, saw Kentucky law officials deciding that the one hundred and forty one sites were not doing anything to prevent the state?s gamers from gaining access to the gambling sites, and that they constituted ?illegal gambling devices?. Kentucky law enforcement officials then declared that the domains were subject to seizure under Kentucky?s anti-gambling laws.

Several attempts were made on behalf of the domains to overturn Kentucky?s suit, namely by iMEGA (Interactive Media Entertainment and Gambling Association) and the IGC (Interactive Gaming Council). These were thrown out though on March 8th when Judge Thomas Wingate effectively ruled in favor of Kentucky when he stated that neither party had standing enough to contest any litigation on the case, and that none of the domains had done anything to prevent the states gamers from being able to gamble on the sites.

It has been reported in recent?casino gambling news, that Judge Wingate demanded that a copy of the order issued in court be sent to Verisign and the domain registrars informing them of the decision and instructing them to transfer each of the 132 domains over the commonwealth. The remaining sites cannot currently be forfeited to Kentucky as they are currently embroiled in legal battles of their own.

In their own case, Poker Stars, Full Tilt, Absolute Poker and others have been given yet another extension by Judge Leonard Sand following their previous extension which is scheduled to expire at the end of March. Under the new extension the defendants will have until May 14 to respond to charges of illegal gambling and money laundering, which now includes the heads of all three sites.

The seizure of the three hugely popular sites was known as ?Black Friday? and has been received hot coverage in the country since the story broke. It is widely expected that all three of defendants will lose their case, following a sudden massive influx of evidence from an Australian citizen who helped to process the illegal transactions for the domains.

There had been complaints by the defense that they hadn?t been allowed enough time to properly examine the new evidence, which is undoubtedly the reason for this new extension on the case. Farmer organisation Beef + Lamb New Zealand is developing a $70 million plan to lift sheep and beef farmers' earnings through on-farm improvements.
The plan, which is still at the concept stage, depends on the Government bearing half the cost.
So far it has received Agriculture Ministry approval to go to the next stage of the Primary Growth Partnership process, the drawing up of a detailed business plan.
Crucial to its final acceptance is that the proposal does not conflict with existing PGP-approved projects. Beef + Lamb has been told by Primary Industries Minister David Carter to talk to Farm IQ, an organisation created in 2010 to run a $151m project which is receiving $60m of government funding.
Farm IQ is backed by government farmer Landcorp and by the country's biggest meat company, Silver Fern Farms, and aims to improve meat industry earnings by finding what customers want and feeding the information back along the value chain.
Beef + Lamb's proposal is to look for on-farm improvements, but has the potential to clash with Farm IQ's moves to give farmers more information about their stock's performance through the use of electronic ear tags.
Silver Fern chief executive Keith Cooper has objected to what he calls the farmer organisation's commercial intrusion into the meat industry, and last month resigned his industry-appointed directorship of Beef + Lamb.
However, Beef + Lamb chairman Mike Petersen said Farm IQ was open only to farmers who agreed to sell a portion of their stock to Silver Fern and he wanted a project that would benefit all farmers.
Silver Fern and Farm IQ had each been asked to join the Beef + Lamb project, which in its early stages had the backing of two other big meat companies, Alliance and Anzco, as well as Blue Sky Meats and ANZ-National Bank.
Since receiving ministry approval to draw up a business plan, several other agriculture companies had asked to join. Petersen said that in recent talks with Farm IQ, the firm had said it was not concerned about Beef + Lamb's project and the two were talking amicably about how to avoid potential clashes.
Farm IQ chief executive Collier Isaacs said the talks had yet to get down to "tin tacks" but agreement "should be feasible".
Petersen said the Beef + Lamb plan was to spend $70m over seven years, with $17m coming from Meat Board reserves, $17m from the industry and the rest from the Government.
It would focus on three main areas: Ramping up efforts to get practical science and technology research findings to as many farmers as possible. "There's been a lot of research done but the big problem is a lot of farmers haven't adopted it," Petersen said.
Improving farmers' business management skills. "Farmers don't necessarily understand balance sheets well, or equity and financing and use of capital? those sorts of things."
Using Beef + Lamb's extensive database to lift farmers' ability to benchmark their performances against others, by farm class, regionally and nationally. "Many farmers won't be performing as well as they think they are. They don't know what they don't know."
Petersen said it was a natural development of the recommendations of last year's Red Meat Sector Strategy, which identified huge potential for a lift in farming performance.

Women with breast and ovarian cancer usually have a mutated form of two genes that may also increase their heart-attack risk, researchers at St. Michael?s Hospital at the University of Toronto say.
In a rodent study, mice with a mutated BRCA1 gene (the same gene found in humans) had a three-to-five times higher death rate, mostly due to heart failure, researchers say. Similarly, mice with both mutated genes have twice the standard heart-failure rate when treated with doxorubicin, a common chemotherapy drug, suggesting a previously unrealized link between breast- and ovarian-cancer therapy and heart-attack risk.
?We now understand that breast cancer and heart disease ? the two leading causes of death for Canadian women ? have a common biological basis, a common soil,? says lead author Subodh Verma, M.D., a cardiac surgeon at St. Michael?s Hospital.

For those of you who rushed out to the theater to see Jennifer Lawrence and company in this weekend's box-office blockbuster "The Hunger Games," how good was Lawrence as Katniss? If you were as delighted and moved by Lawrence's performance as we were, you're probably wondering what the Oscar nominee will be up to next.
Lucky for you, we have a few answers! Here's a little rundown of what to expect from Lawrence and where to see more of this talented, charming and all-around likable leading lady.
(Side note: Before she jumps right into another project, we hope Lawrence takes a vacation of some sort and gets a little rest and relaxation after her extensive, worldwide promotional tourfor "Games." We loved seeing the cast at so many events and so dressed up, but she has to be exhausted!)
Anyway, we have to wait until fall until we get another Lawrence film. The first is the horror/thriller "House at the End of the Street," co-starring Elisabeth Shue. In the film, Lawrence and Shue play a mother/daughter duo who get wrapped up in the mystery of a murder in a small town. Shortly after the September 21 release of "House at the End of the Street," fans will see a very brief appearance by Lawrence in "Devil You Know," playing the younger version of Rosamund Pike's character Zoe.
In November, we'll see Lawrence in "The Silver Linings Playbook," the first of two films co-starring Bradley Cooper. "Silver Linings" revolves around a man who tries to put his life back together after spending years in a mental institution.
"I just wrapped a movie called 'The Silver Linings Playbook,' " Lawrence told MTV News recently. "And then I'm going to go shoot another Bradley Cooper movie. It's not a Bradley Cooper movie — Bradley Cooper's in the movie — it's a Jennifer Lawrence movie with Bradley in it," she joked. "Bradley Cooper and I are going to come out with a Jennifer Lawrence/ Bradley Cooper box set."
Their second film together is "Serena," about a Depression-era couple who face personal complications when they learn that Lawrence's character cannot bear children, which has a negative impact on the future of their lumber company.
Fun fact about "Serena": Lawrence's role was originally intended for Angelina Jolie.
"I'm not at the status where I have her roles. I have her leftovers, let's be clear," she joked of taking over for Jolie. "She left it for me. I have her garbage. No, that's a wonderful place to be. I'm an actor digging through Angelina Jolie's garbage. I've made it." Shooting on "Serena" has yet to start.
After her work on "Serena," we're all hoping Lawrence will be back playing Katniss for "Catching Fire" or getting painted to play Mystique in the yet-to-be-announced sequel to "X-Men: First Class." Because "Fire" has a November 22, 2013, release date already locked in place, we're betting Lawrence will be back wielding a bow and arrow before she's spending countless hours in the makeup chair to "get painted again" for "X-Men."
