Women with breast and ovarian cancer usually have a mutated form of two genes that may also increase their heart-attack risk, researchers at St. Michael?s Hospital at the University of Toronto say.
In a rodent study, mice with a mutated BRCA1 gene (the same gene found in humans) had a three-to-five times higher death rate, mostly due to heart failure, researchers say. Similarly, mice with both mutated genes have twice the standard heart-failure rate when treated with doxorubicin, a common chemotherapy drug, suggesting a previously unrealized link between breast- and ovarian-cancer therapy and heart-attack risk.
?We now understand that breast cancer and heart disease ? the two leading causes of death for Canadian women ? have a common biological basis, a common soil,? says lead author Subodh Verma, M.D., a cardiac surgeon at St. Michael?s Hospital.
The study appears online in the journal Nature Communications.
