Fans of Vanessa Carlton were no doubt disappointed when the singer had to unexpectedly cancel several dates on her fall tour. But it turns out that there's a good -- albeit sad -- explanation for the interruption. In a new post on her official website, the star reveals she recently suffered a heartbreaking health scare.

"I announced that I was pregnant during the first week of tour. The day after our NYC show on Oct. 15th, I was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, or in my case it was a fallopian pregnancy (the embryo settled in my tube, which is the width of a straw)," she says in the post. "This is not considered a viable pregnancy because the fetus cannot develop, and it is a high-risk situation for the mother because of the potential for tubal rupture and internal bleeding."
Fortunately, Carlton's doctors caught the condition relatively early, so she was able to have just a mild dose of chemotherapy instead of surgery. "This would hopefully shrink the pregnancy and save my tube," she explains.
Last week, however, complications arose. "This past Monday, Oct. 28th, 11 days after the chemo shot and despite our best efforts, my tube started to rupture and I was experiencing internal bleeding," Carlton, 33, shares. She was able to get to the ER relatively quickly, but her entire right fallopian tube had to be surgically removed.
Today, Nov. 5, the singer experienced yet another setback. "I started getting intense nerve pain in one of my incisions," she writes. "I was all set to fly to Vancouver on Wednesday but, alas, I am not ready yet...I need to stay close to my doctors and the hospital in case this initial pain turns into something more serious."
The one bright spot through the whole ordeal, she says, has been her fiance. He flew all night to meet her in the hospital and even brought her clean (lacy!) underwear. "I realize I am a lucky woman on many levels here," she shares.
That said, she's "so bummed" about having to "jank up" her tour. "It started off pretty great. My favorite even," she writes. "Gimme a couple more days, I'll be ready."
