Who Has the Germiest Offices?

May 30, 2012 7:12pm

Men?s offices harbor significantly more bacteria than women?s, according to a new study published in the online journal PLoS ONE.

The types of bacteria are the same, and come mostly from the skin, nose, mouth and digestive tract.? Several types are also commonly found in feces.

Researchers from the San Diego State University and the University of Arizona took 450 samples from different office surfaces in New York City, San Francisco and Tucson, Ariz.

Chairs and phones had the highest amount of bacteria, while desktops, keyboards and computer mice had fewer bacteria.

One of the main reasons the researchers did the study was to learn more about what microorganisms inhabit workplaces.

?Westerners spend about 90 percent of time indoors in artificial environments that we build, and workplaces are where we spend a lot of our time,? said co-author Scott Kelley, a professor of biology at San Diego State.

Kelly said he believes men?s work spaces have more bacteria simply because men are generally bigger than women, though there could also be other reasons.

For example, he said, ?Skin is a major source of the bacteria, and if men?s hands are physically bigger, there?s more surface area to colonize bacteria.? Men?s mouths are also bigger.?

Philip Tierno, a clinical professor microbiology and pathology at NYU Langone Medical Center, said another reason is that men just aren?t as clean as women.

?Men tend to be less tidy.? They wash their hands less than women and tend to be a little more cavalier about eating from the floor or from other surfaces,? he said.? Tierno was not involved in the study.? ?Also, numerous people touch chairs and phones, but not as many people touch keyboards.?

Previous research found that the opposite is true ? women?s offices are more contaminated than men?s, perhaps in part because women use cosmetics and are more likely to store food in their desks.

One reason for the discrepancy between the studies, Tierno said, is the method used to identify the bacteria.? Kelley?s study uses molecular methods, which are more sensitive and specific than the culture-based identification used in other research.

In addition to differences between men and women, Kelley said the study also found that there was no significant difference between the types of bacteria found in offices in San Francisco and New York. In Tucson, though, there were different types of bacteria associated with drier, desert-like climates.

Though there may be a lot of bacteria in office spaces, Kelley said, most of it doesn?t do much harm.

?Most of what?s brought in is harmless, but it?s very easy to spread.? If someone gets sick, they should stay home because they are bring bacteria in with them and making others sick.?

How to Report Trademark Infringement in Google Play | Technology ...

Google Play

Google Play is Google?s latest attempt at aggregating all their apps and creating an app store for Android phones and tablets. Many developers are?diversifying?their app portfolio by building beyond the iOS to gain more visibility. While iOS is undoubtedly the most popular app platform, Google Play (Android) is fast becoming a recognized platform for the plethora of Android smartphones and tablets in the market. With more applications going live on Google Play (Android), many ecosystems like Android face the harsh reality of some unscrupulous bad developers launching misleading and low-quality apps potentially infringing on a brand?s identity. A reporting system is essential to tackle such legally sensitive issues and Google Play has a system in place for legal brand owners to file a trademark infringement report. The Google Play trademark infringement ?form is bundled with the parent form Google uses to tackle any content removal from Google. Be sure to follow the steps as indicated on the Google website and do have all the documentation ready to ensure a smooth filing process.

Too much vitamin D can be as unhealthy as too little

Too much vitamin D can be as unhealthy as too little [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-May-2012

University of Copenhagen

Scientists know that Vitamin D deficiency is not healthy. However, new research from the University of Copenhagen now indicates that too high a level of the essential vitamin is not good either. The study is based on blood samples from 247,574 Copenhageners. The results have just been published in the reputed scientific Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Vitamin D is instrumental in helping calcium reach our bones, thus lessening the risk from falls and the risk of broken hips. Research suggests that vitamin D is also beneficial in combating cardiac disease, depression and certain types of cancers. The results from a study conducted by the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences now support the benefits of vitamin D in terms of mortality risk. However, the research results also show higher mortality in people with too high levels of vitamin D in their bloodstream:

"We have had access to blood tests from a quarter of a million Copenhageners. We found higher mortality in people with a low level of vitamin D in their blood, but to our surprise, we also found it in people with a high level of vitamin D. We can draw a graph showing that perhaps it is harmful with too little and too much vitamin D," explains Darshana Durup, PhD student.

If the blood contains less than 10 nanomol (nmol) of vitamin per liter of serum, mortality is 2.31 times higher. However, if the blood contains more than 140 nmol of vitamin per liter of serum, mortality is higher by a factor of 1.42. Both values are compared to 50 nmol of vitamin per liter of serum, where the scientists see the lowest mortality rate.

More studies are needed

Darshana Durup emphasises that while scientists do not know the cause of the higher mortality, she believes that the new results can be used to question the wisdom of those people who claim that you can never get too much vitamin D:

"It is important to conduct further studies in order to understand the relationship. A lot of research has been conducted on the risk of vitamin D deficiency. However, there is no scientific evidence for a 'more is better' argument for vitamin D, and our study does not support the argument either. We hope that our study will inspire others to study the cause of higher mortality with a high level of vitamin D," says Darshana Durup. She adds:

"We have moved into a controversial area that stirs up strong feelings just like debates on global warming and research on nutrition. But our results are based on a quarter of a million blood tests and provide an interesting starting point for further research."

The largest study of its kind

The study is the largest of its kind and it was only possible to conduct it because of Denmark's civil registration system, which is unique in the Nordic countries. The 247,574 blood samples come from the Copenhagen General Practitioners Laboratory:

"Our data material covers a wide age range. The people who participated had approached their own general practitioners for a variety of reasons and had had the vitamin D level in their bloodstream measured in that context. This means that while the study can show a possible association between mortality and a high level of vitamin D, we cannot as yet explain the higher risk," explains Darshana Durup.

Therefore in future research project scientists would like to compare the results with information from disease registers such as the cancer register. Financial support is currently being sought for such projects.

ERIK NORLANDER Music Machine music review by - Progarchives

3 stars"This is the story of Johnny America, a new kind of music machine"

Just like David Bowie's classic The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, Erik Norlander's Music Machine is a concept album about an imaginary Rock Star. The storyline and the lyrics of this "Heavy Metal symphony" are sadly rather cheesy and full of cliches, but the music itself is mostly very good. The styles involved on this massive double album include traditional Heavy Metal in the vein of Deep Purple and Dio-era Black Sabbath, Classic Rock, Neo-Classical Metal, Progressive Metal, Power Metal, Hard Rock, Blues Rock and energetic keyboard-driven Symphonic Prog in the vein of Emerson Lake & Palmer.

The guests include Mark Boals (who also provided vocals for Yngwie Malmsteen), Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (of Blue Oyster Cult-fame), and drummer Vinny Appice (who played with Black Sabbath and Dio), and several others. The backgrounds of these musicians give you further clues of what you will find here. Ayreon's Metal Operas, that relied on a similar set of styles (and to which Norlander contributed), might also provide some hints. Though, thank goodness, Music Machine is not as sprawling and all-over-the-place as Ayreon's works, I am sure that it will appeal to many of the same fans. The vocalists and instrumentalists involved are all very good, but the foremost instrument are Norlander's brilliant keyboard playing.

There certainly are some great moments on this album but also a few weaker moments. With a running time of one hour and 46 minutes, you tend to get a little bit exhausted towards the end even if it is mostly very good music. Had the cheesy storyline been toned down somewhat and the running time been brought down to fit on a single disc, Music Machine could probably have attracted a higher rating from me. But as it stands it is just a good, and not a fantastic, follow-up to Into The Sunset. Both of these studio albums are definitely recommended, but the live album Stars Rain Down is more consistent and provides a nice cross-section of tracks from these two albums plus some of Norlander's best works from other sources.

Thad McCotter, a former GOP presidential hopeful and the U.S. Representative to Michigan's 11th congressional district, may not have turned in enough signatures to qualify for the Aug. 7 Republican primary in his suburban Detroit district.

The Michigan state elections bureau found McCotter did not have 1,000 valid signatures. Though McCotter turned in the maximum allowed signatures, issues with duplicate signatures could keep McCotter from making the primary ballot, the Detroit Free Press reports.

McCotter posted a press release to his Twitter Friday night addressing the situation:

?I have been apprised my campaign may have submitted insufficient petition signatures to appear on the August primary ballot as a candidate for the 11th Congressional District's Republican nomination.

Fully respecting the accuracy and integrity of the Secretary of State's office, we will thoroughly review our petition signatures for their sufficiency or insufficiency.

Out of respect for Memorial Day, an announcement of our findings will be made public on Tuesday.?

Despite the potential mishap, Michigan Republican Party spokesman Matt Frendewey seems to be confident Republicans can keep McCotter's conservative spot.

?We are certain to control this seat,? Frendeway said. ?We?re confident in that.?

McCotter made headlines in July 2011 when he launched a longshot bid for the Republican presidential nomination. After struggling to raise money and having a poor showing in the August Ames Straw Poll, McCotter terminated his campaign efforts in September 2011.

SereniGy G-Pets - Supplement for Dog Hip Dysplasia | Sharing ...

People love their pets, and for good reason. They are happy, loyal, and always aim to please. So why would you not want to keep them around for as long as possible, in a healthy state where they can truly enjoy all the things that pets like to do? This is exactly why SereniGy G-Pets, Canine Formula, was created. Find out how you can keep your dog happy and free of painful conditions like hip dysplasia with supplementation and the right diet.

SereniGy G-Pets For Hip Dysplasia and Joint Health

If you are the owner of a dog, especially a larger breed, you may have heard about or seen the effects of aging on the joints, with common reference made to hip dysplasia, or what some people call dog arthritis.

Dog arthritis, or hip dysplasia, can occur in your pet as surely as it can occur in humans. Excessive wear and tear, combined with a high grain fed diet (notorious in commercial dog food), leaves the muscles and joints in a more acidic and tightened state, thereby leaving them more prone to break down.

Exacerbating this situation is systemic inflammation, depletion of vitamins and minerals, and stress. Dogs are susceptible to many of the same factors as we are, and often are more sensitive especially in the case of stress (a dog picks up on everything, including stress in your household). This makes hip dysplasia worse!

The quickest way to relieve your dog of painful arthritis, hip dysplasia and other health debilitating factors is to provide them with a supplement that addresses the core factors that lead to it, and SereniGy G-Pets does just that for your dog.

SereniGy G-Pets ? Nutrients For a Happier, Healthier Dog

The SereniGy G-Pet formula addresses many core factors, with a focus on hip dysplasia and joint health. Some of the most effective ingredients in the SereniGy G-Pet formula against hip dysplasia and poor joint health are as follows:

SereniGy G-Pet Core Ingredients

Glucosamine ? Effective in repairing wear and tear of the joints (hip dysplasia).

MSM ? Helps build joints, decrease inflammation, detox, and strengthen connective tissue (joint health).

Hyaluronic Acid ? Anti-aging nutrient that improves mobility and decreases pain (hip dysplasia).

Perilla Seed ? High in Omega 3?s, which help decrease inflammation and improves joint health (hip dysplasia & joint health).

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) ? Strong antioxidant, which helps decrease inflammation and premature aging (overall health).

Ganoderma Lucidum ? Strong antioxidant, decreases inflammation, and combats stress (overall health).

Add to these key ingredients an array of B-Vitamins and minerals, and you have a nutrient rich formula in SereniGy G-Pets that addresses hip dysplasia, joint pain, and overall health.

SereniGy G-Pets Is ?Dog Approved?

So now you have the SereniGy G-Pets formula for dogs to relieve common issues like hip dysplasia, but is your dog actually going to take it?

Fortunately, there is absolutely no issue to get these chewable tablets in your dogs. The SereniGy G-Pet formula contains liver, which makes these chewables smell delicious, and the surest way to your dog stomach is through his or her sniffer, and I can tell you from experience with my chocolate lab that one glimpse of the SereniGy G-Pets bottle and the dog comes a runnin?!

Adopt A Healthier Diet For Your Dog

Combine the SereniGy G-Pets with a more effective diet (like the BARF Diet), and soon your dog will be acting like a puppy again.

Why a raw diet?

Dogs are biologically set up to eat raw food, not excessive amounts of grains and soft food. When?s the last time you seen an ancestor of a dog (wolf, coyote, etc) starting a fire and cooking up its meat along with a nice side of cornmeal and other grains?

Right?never. They eat the raw flesh and muscle meat of other animals, and get a small helping of grains from that animal?s stomach. Take a clue from that and your dog is already set up for a healthier future!

Cancer may require simpler genetic mutations than previously thought

Friday, May 25, 2012

Chromosomal deletions in DNA often involve just one of two gene copies inherited from either parent. But scientists haven't known how a deletion in one gene from one parent, called a "hemizygous" deletion, can contribute to cancer.

A research team led by Stephen Elledge, a professor in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, and his post-doctoral fellow Nicole Solimini, has now provided an answer. The most common hemizygous deletions in cancer, their research shows, involve a variety of tumor suppressing genes called STOP genes (suppressors of tumorigenesis and proliferation) that scatter randomly throughout the genome, but that sometimes cluster in the same place on a chromosome. And these clusters, said Elledge, who is also a professor of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, tend to be deleted as a group. "Eliminating the cluster gives a bigger bang for the deletion buck," he said.

This finding is especially interesting in light of the two-hit model of cancer formation, which holds that both copies of a recessive gene need to be inactivated to trigger a biological effect. Thus the loss of a single tumor suppressor copy should have little or no influence on tumor cell proliferation because the remaining copy located on the other chromosome is there to pick up the slack.

Elledge's research points to a different hypothesis, namely that STOP genes in a hemizygous deletion aren't recessive but are instead haploinsufficient, meaning that they depend on two copies to function normally. "If a tumor suppressor is haploinsufficient, then a single gene copy lacks the potency needed to fully restrain tumorigenesis," Elledge explained, who is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. "So by removing clusters of haploinsufficient genes all at once, the cancer cell immediately propels its growth forward without having to wait for the other copies to also be lost."

Angelika Amon, a professor of biology at the Massachusetts of Technology, said she's surprised by the findings. "We've known from a lot of human syndromes that haploinsufficiency is widespread in the development of complex multicellular organisms," she said. "But these data show it's also critical for individual cells and cell proliferation."

The results also offer a different take on the two-hit model in carcinogenesis, Amon said. Being remarkably unstable, cancer cells can delete gene copies at every turn of the corner. If the loss of a single tumor suppressor copy provides no survival advantage for the tumor, then the tumor has no incentive to retain the cell with that deletion. But if the loss of that copy boosts proliferation, then the probability of a second hit later is greatly increased. "So haploinsufficiency is a way for the cancer cell to dramatically accelerate the acquisition of growth beneficial mutations," Amon said.

In other words, all it takes is a 50 percent reduction in gene activity for a cancer cell to grow. "That tells us it's a lot easier to get cancer than we might have hoped," Amon said.

According to Elledge, the number of hemizygotic deletions averages roughly six per tumor, with some tumors?breast and pancreatic, for instance?averaging up to ten. Each deletion involves 25 to 40 genes, many of them STOP genes, but also a few GO genes (growth enhancers and oncogenes) that enhance proliferation. That the STOP genes substantially outnumber their GO counterparts is important, Elledge explained, because it means cancer cells can tilt scales toward proliferation without also compromising it at the same time.

"The data reveal a lot of haploinsufficient players that have small effects individually, but large effects in combination," Elledge said. "Unfortunately, it's not easy to see how to take advantage of that chemotherapeutically."

What's important about the results, he emphasized, is that they open up new views on how tumors evolve. Moreso, they underscore the importance of proliferation as a fundamental feature of tumor growth, he added.

The challenge now, Elledge said, will be to find out which of the genes in a recurring deletion are haploinsufficient. "At the moment, we estimate roughly 25 percent," he said. "So these findings could also have important ramifications for other human diseases in addition to cancer."

USC Dornsife Scientific Diving: The Guam and Calayan Rails

By Dawnielle Tellez

In the Pacific, a genus of birds known as Gallirallus has evolved on various islands forming twelve distinct modern species, endemic to different islands ranging from Okinawa all the way to New Zealand.? Among these species are the Calayan rail (Gallirallus calayanensis) also known as the piding, and the Guam rail (Gallirallus owstoni) also known as the koko.? Although they are closely similar birds physiologically, threats to their survival differ due to the details of human impact ? specifically habitat availability and predation by invasive species.

On our first day in Guam, we visited the Department of Agriculture where we were fortunate to encounter several endangered species including the Guam rail.? A tropical depression passing to the south of Guam and greater restrictions on entering the captive enclosure prevented us from visiting the breeding cages, so our meet and greet began in a back room of the office building.

Excitement filled the room as a local wildlife biologist in the Department of Agriculture and Wildlife Resources (DAWR), brought out a female koko, one of five birds that DAWR has imprinted for educational purposes.? We observed her beautiful plumage and graceful stance as she gobbled up mealworms, her favorite treat.

Enthralled by the little bird, we took many photos and jumped at the opportunity to feed and interact with the bird.? Meeting the koko brought my previous knowledge of the species to life, making the rare encounter even more meaningful.

Like many endemic island species, the Guam rail has suffered much damage as a result of modern human impact.? Historically, the Guam rail has been a symbol for the island nation and Chamorro native people.? Despite the beloved status of this bird, the rails died off over several decades in an onslaught of brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis), another species that we were able to encounter.

Researchers speculate that the snake arrived shortly after WWII ? stowing away on a cargo ship, possibly from Papua New Guinea, where the snakes are native (Department of Agriculture).? As an alien species, the brown tree snakes thrived in Guam due to lack of natural predation, and it quickly demolished the rails, a flightless source of easy protein.? In 1983, G. owstoni populations were estimated around 2,000 individuals; merely four years later, fewer than 100 were left (Bird Life International).

The Guam rail was declared extinct in the wild as of 1987 (Bird Life International).? According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, major efforts have been made in captive breeding programs recently that have resulted in several reintroduction attempts to wild habitats on Cocos Island, south of Guam, and Rota, north of Guam.

The author and class interacting with a juvenile brown tree snake. (Photo by Jim Haw)

However, these reintroductions have been hit and miss.? Over a dozen zoos across the mainland United States have established successful captive breeding programs.? Today, there are an estimated three hundred Guam rails alive worldwide (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service).

Far from the rollercoaster-like story of the Guam rail is the history of the endemic Calayan rail, found on the northern Filipino island of Calayan.? Only declared a species in 2004, the Calayan rail is relatively successful in its favored coralline limestone habitat.

However, due to its small population of only 202 individuals as of 2006, the species is listed under the IUCN as vulnerable (Bird Life International).? Although the Calayan rail has not been decimated by alien species like its relative on Guam, it is no stranger to threats.? Mainly, the Calayan rail suffers from habitat loss due to human encroachment.

Calayan Rail. (Photo by C. Oliveros)

Calayan Rail. (Photo by C. Oliveros)

Even though humans minimally populate Calayan, their impacts are still felt across the island?s ecosystems.? Conversion of habitats to croplands, unregulated subsistence logging, road building, and trapping ? both accidental and intentional for domestic trade, all contribute to Calayan rail losses (Calayan Rail Fact Sheet).? Additionally, human population growth increases the likeliness of increased populations of cats, dogs, and rats, which can also prey upon the Calayan rail (Bird Life International).

Similar to the recent push for conservation of the Guam rail, there been a noticeable increase in Calayan rail conservation.? The Sangguniany Bayan of Calayan passed Municipal Ordinance No. 84 stating that the capture, sale, possession, and collection of the Calayan rail is prohibited with violations subject to expensive fines (Calayan Rail Fact Sheet).? In addition, the Isla Biodiversity Conservation established the Calayan Rail project, which increases awareness about conservation efforts across the Philippines and its schools.? Also, the Calayan municipality and surrounding waters have been proposed as a protected area, which would greatly benefit the Calayan rail species (Calayan Rail Fact Sheet).

As both Guamanian and Filipino societies continue to change, so too will the stories of the rails.? Because wildlife and mankind are so closely linked, the consequences of our actions must be examined carefully, especially when dealing with such fragile populations as these.? Not only are these birds native to regions rich in biodiversity, their stories serve as warnings as to what damaging effects human actions can have on wildlife if left unchanged.

Mobile phones or cell phones are wireless portable, short range electronic devices used for mobile voice data communication. The communication is carried over a cell sites. Mobile phones support services like messaging, e-mail, gaming, Bluetooth, infra-red to name only a few.

Way back in 1915, the American company AT&T contemplated the use of wireless phones. This idea was soon shelved as the company feared that its control on wired service would end. Cell phones in 1996 ushered in a new age of mobile telephony. Mobile sets could now be connected to the internet and wireless e-mail. A new generation of Smart phones was born. The mobile phones are designed with latest technology which has turned as pocket PC.

Mobile phones can transmit and receive from a number of cell sites or base stations which are fitted with the help of special antennas. These sites are normally built on a tower. Mobiles transmit voice and data to the nearest cell site with the help of a low powered transceiver. The mobile number will be registered with the mobile telephone exchange.

The sites have low powered transmitters (1 or 2 watts) and can relay between the mobile phones and the main switch. The switch helps to connect the call to another caller of the same wireless service provider or to the public telephone network. This dialogue that ensues is a flow of data which is digital and digitized audio.

There are several categories of mobile phones from basic phones to feature phones such as music phones, camera phones and smart phones. Technological advances have led to miniaturization and increased processing power of microchips. Even more features have been added to these mobiles. A high-end Smart phone five years ago is a standard phone today.

Mobile phones have features that go far beyond text-messaging and voice calls. They include internet browsing, music (MP3) playback, memo recording, personal organizer functions, e-mail, built-in-cameras, Push-to-Talk, infra red and Bluetooth connectivity. It is envisaged that in future, they will also be able to serve as consoles to online high quality games!

The utility values of mobile phones are increasing in their scope and variety. In 1999, the first mobile internet service i-Mode was launched. Of late, mobile telephones have been used by public activists and journalists. Mobile phones have added a new dimension to news -gathering. Many companies have begun to offer mobile career guidance services. There are tools for creating websites on mobile phones Banking and commerce are increasingly conducted on mobile phones in many parts of the world.

The sale of ring tones to mobiles phone companies brought a new dimension to the mobile phone industry. It is also called the seventh of the Mass Media with Print, recording, cinema, radio, TV and the internet preceding it. Mobile phones have made a great revolution in the recent years, with the advent of new technologies.

Law enforcement agencies use the triangulation method to trace mobile signals to the hide-outs of the most ?wanted? people. In developing countries, in the last decade, mobiles have become pervasive tools of communication. Truly, mobile phones have only begun to re-define the concept of connectivity in the world.
