In this day and age, first dates have taken on new meaning. In the world of conventional dating ? the world our parents and anyone born in the Baby Boomer era knew ? there were fewer first dates and you actually knew the person you sat across from at dinner. But with the advent of online and mobile dating, going on tons of first dates with utter strangers is the new norm.

Simply getting into this new mindset can be a big challenge for many people. They want so badly to find someone they connect with and grow weary of meeting the wrong people. As a result, some develop a method for weeding out these wrong people as soon as possible.

What is this method, you ask? I call it the ?Let?s cut the crap and get right to the serious stuff so I don?t waste my time with the wrong people? method. Advocates of this method look for reasons to rule someone out by asking difficult and personal questions right up front. Here are a few common examples:

1. What led up to your getting divorced?
2. Are you looking for marriage and kids?
3. I?m looking for a serious relationship. Are you?
4. Why/how did your past relationships end?
5. What are your goals in life?
6. Why are you still single?

Questions 1-5 are great questions. Crucial questions, even. However, they?re inappropriate to ask someone you hardly know, and have no business on a first date. And Question 6? That one is never appropriate, whether you mean it as ?Someone your age shouldn?t be single? or ?You seem too great to be single.? There is no good answer to that question. Everyone is single at some point in their life, no matter how great they are.

But I Don?t Want to Waste My Time!

Of course you don?t. You don?t want someone who cheated on their ex with the neighbor, isn?t looking for a serious relationship like you are, or has some other deal-breaker. But first dates should never be interviews, where you ask test questions and see if your date fails. By doing this, you not only rule out the wrong people, you rule out the right ones too. Why? Because even those who pass your test will hate being put on the spot by a total stranger, or will dislike their happy hour taking a turn down Serious Lane.

Remember: A first date, meet-and-greet, or impromptu meeting is an opportunity to get a feel for someone: Is she interesting? Is he polite? Am I interested enough to go on a second date? That?s it. Save the personal questions for people you?ve built rapport and trust with.

Study finds genes associated with hippocampal atrophy

In a genome-wide association (GWA) study, researchers from Boston University Schools of Medicine (BUSM) and Public Health (BUSPH) have identified several genes which influence degeneration of the hippocampus, the part of the brain most associated with Alzheimer disease (AD). The study, which currently appears online as a Rapid Communication in the Annals of Neurology, demonstrates the efficacy of endophenotypes for broadening the understanding of the genetic basis of and pathways leading to AD.

AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder for which there are no prevention methods. Available drugs only marginally affect disease severity and progression, making AD effectively untreatable.

GWA studies using very large samples have increased the number of robust associations to 10 genes, including APOE. However, these genes account for no more than 35 percent of the inherited risk of AD and most of the genetic underpinning of the disorder remains unexplained. According to the researchers, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain provides in vivo quantitative measures of neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular brain injury that may represent AD-related changes long before clinical symptoms appear. These measures are more powerful than comparisons of individuals with AD with cognitively healthy persons because they avoid misclassification of normal persons who will develop disease in the future.

BUSM researchers conducted a two-stage GWA study for quantitative measures of hippocampal volume (HV), total cerebral volume (TCV) and white matter hyperintensities (WMH). Brain MRI measures of HV, TCV and WMH were obtained from 981 Caucasian and 419 African-American AD cases and their cognitively normal siblings in the MIRAGE (Multi Institutional Research in Alzheimer's Genetic Epidemiology) Study. In addition, similar MRI measures were obtained from 168 AD cases, 336 individuals with mild cognitive impairment and 188 controls (all Caucasian) in the AD Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) Study. The MIRAGE Caucasian families and ADNI subjects were included in the first stage and the MIRAGE African American families were added in stage two. Results from the two Caucasians data sets were combined by meta-analysis.

In stage two, one genetic marker (i.e. single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP) from each of the gene regions that were most significantly associated with AD in the Caucasian data sets was evaluated in the African-American data set.

Novel genome-wide significant associations were observed for HV with SNPs in the APOE, F5/SELP, LHFP, and GCFC2 gene regions. All of these associations were supported by evidence in each data set.

"Our two-stage GWAS identified highly significant associations between a measure of degeneration in the brain region most strongly correlated with AD and several genes in both Caucasian and African American samples containing AD, cognitively impaired and cognitively healthy subjects. One of these associations was with the ?4 variant of APOE which is the most well-established genetic risk factor for AD.

Other associations were demonstrated with markers in F5/SELP, LHFP, and GCFC2, genes not previously implicated in this disease" explained senior author Lindsay Farrer, PhD, chief of biomedical genetics at BUSM. He also noted, "previous studies showed that blood level of P-selectin (the protein encoded by SELP) has been correlated with rate of cognitive decline in AD patients."

Farrer believes it is very likely that the number and specificity of these associations will increase in future studies using larger samples and focused on additional precise structural and functional MRI measures. "These findings will inform experiments designed to increase our understanding of disease-causing mechanism and may lead to new therapeutics targets," added Farrer.

I was really surprised when I saw him.? He was back with his family and they were happy to have him.? After almost two years of ?being dead?, the prodigal son had returned to his senses.? Or had he?

I had good reasons to suspect he was up to no good.? But I wasn?t sure.? Then one night, I received a text message confirming my suspicions.? A member of the family wrote and said, ?After a beautiful evening spent together, my brother let his true colors show when he asked mom and dad to loan him a ton of money.? They said no.? At that, he burst out the door throwing a fit (and not a few horrible insults) vowing never to return again.??

I knew it.? People don?t change overnight.

Recently, I had lunch with a man who had a problem on his hands.? He allowed his twenty-five-year-old niece to move into his home with his family.? She said she needed some time to pay off her credit card debts. ?She promised it would be for only 10 months.? Well, after two years, five vacations, and almost one thousand dollars spent in a single day at the Dallas Galleria, she?s still living with them.? She was ?visibly upset? when told she had to leave in two weeks.?

She didn?t need a place to stay.? She needed a good talk and a kick in the pants!

Making good fruit out of bad trees.? For the longest time now, we?ve been trying to produce good fruit from bad trees.? In other words, we?ve been trying to get good results from bad decisions.? It won?t work.? But we keep trying, and?our nation keeps spending billions (maybe even trillions) of dollars fixing problems rather than preventing them. ?Let me give you one example out of thousands.? Our government will give free bibles to any inmate that asks for one.? But it won't give a free bible to any student that asks for one.? Why is it?? Why are we so backwards?? Why are we so decadent in our religious intolerance?? When did Jesus Christ ever hurt anyone?? When did the federal government ever hurt anyone?? Ooh?ooh?I know?I know!!!

Making good fruit out of a good tree.? Many Americans think that poor people need a hand out. ?I agree.? But what kind of handouts do they need?? What handouts did the Irish or Italians, or Jews or Chinese or Koreans receive?? Many!! But none from the federal government.? Instead, the government insisted that they get help from family and friends.? And so inadvertently, since we never learned this lesson, they strengthened family ties.? You can still see the remnants of this reality when you visit ?Little Italy?, ?Chinatown?, ?Little Havana?, ?Irish Town?, ?Little Portugal?, ?Little India?, ?Greek town? ?Little Saigon? (or not so little ?Saigon Mall?), etc?

Of course The Government can help,?but they demand a break in?ties (especially religious ones) for every good they do.? Whereas with families, every good they do ties them closer together.?

Are rich people better off than poor people?? Yes!? And we know that because all the rich people keep telling us.? But I think I would shock a lot of Americans if I told them that poor people are better off than rich people, and in many ways.? In fact, if it weren?t for the poor people, the rich people would find life meaningless!? From my personal conversations with our rich and yuppie families, it seems as though the greatest joys that come to their life come from poor people.? In fact, rich kids tell me they find more pleasure in life when they go on missions rather than when they go to Ft. Lauderdale.? In fact, a lot of rich kids tell me they learn more from the poor people than they do from their rich parents!? What do poor people think of all this attention?? Are they surprised to hear it?? No.? They can see it for themselves.

A good tree bears great fruit, regardless of whether or not it is a banana tree or an apple tree or an orange tree.? Is one better than the other?? In some ways yes, and in other ways no.?

Of course, one can accuse me of being an idiot, a fanatic, a republican, a libertarian.? But strangely enough, the one thing I would not be accused of is being wrong.? Speak to a poor person.? Go visit a poor family.? What do you see??

We love to do experiments, especially bogus ones.? We love to shoot a bullet through a watermelon to see what result it will have (like we didn?t know already).? When it comes to social engineering experiments, we do the same thing.? Like a bomb, we drop an idea from the sky (as if the earth was one gigantic test tube) and wait to see what long term affects this will have.? We don?t know for certain what to expect or what we will even get.? You might not know this, but we are doing this all the time.? We are a lot more careful with our environment than we are with our marriages, families and children.? A farmer knows that if he plants an apple seed, he will get an apple.? If he plants an orange seed, he will get an orange.? It would be ridiculous for the farmer to expect an apple tree from an orange tree.? But for some strange reason we think if we twist and bend and turn upside down marriage, family and children, then it should have better than great effects on our children and families.? Hmmm.? Interesting.?

What do you think we will get the day we have the best schools ever, the best technology ever, the best government ever, the best social programs (like health care and social security) ever?? What do you think we will get if we spend 1 trillion dollars more on public school education and teachers salaries?? What do you think we will see if we spend 1 trillion more on fitness centers and weight loss clinics?

Let?s ask the poor people.?

You know what I think?? Without strong families, strong marriages and a strong faith, we will get what we already have:? a bad tree with bad fruit.

Money can buy a lot of things, but it can?t produce a loving and faith-filled family.? In fact, it tends to spoil them rotten.?

Why Bobbi Kristina skipped dad's wedding

Bobby Brown's June 18 nuptials to Alicia Etheridge were bittersweet for the former New Edition singer. One of his loved ones was noticeably absent from the celebration: his daughter with the late Whitney Houston, Bobbi Kristina.

"Bobby Brown was desperate for her to go to his recent wedding, but she would not return his calls," a source close to the 19-year-old tells Us Weekly. The R&B crooner went to great lengths to attempt to reach his daughter -- even employing a third party to attempt to get his message through.

"Bobby got a go-between to contact Bobbi Kristina to try and persuade her, but she told them she was not going because she did not like Alicia, and that she was [busy] filming her reality show with [aunt] Pat Houston in New York," the insider shares.

The source adds that Bobbi Kristina's aunt Pat -- Whitney Houston's sister -- is doing her best to keep the troubled teen in check. "She's trying to act like a mother figure," the source explains. "Pat does not like Bobby Brown and was pleased that Bobbi Kristina did not go to the wedding, as she feels that her father will always try and take advantage of her."

Over the years, Bobby Brown's relationship with his daughter has been strained during the best of times, marred by long periods of estrangement. Most recently, the pair reunited during a tense NYC lunch in April.

Bobbi Kristina "was on her phone and texting a crazy amount," an eyewitness told Us. "She didn't seem too thrilled to be there, in all honesty."

As for the current state of their relationship?

"It's a sad situation, but at the moment they're not getting along," the insider reveals. "The wedding snub hasn't helped with their relationship."

Bobbi Kristina's mom Whitney Houston passed away February 11 at the age of 48; a source told Us at the time that the teen was "shattered" by her mom's shocking death.

Bobbi "wanted to be just like her mother," the source shared. "She was really her mom's caretaker and biggest cheerleader and biggest fan . . . I don't know how she will be able to go on."

Courtney Love sued over unpaid legal bills

Courtney Love is being sued by former lawyers over unpaid legal bills. Keith A. Fink and Associates allege that while working with Love from January 2009 to October 2009, Love failed to pay up on most of her approximately $518,000 accumulated fees. The lawsuit, filed today in Los Angeles, also claims Love's business manager promised payment, citing Love's potential income from the Nirvana estate, but the money didn't materialize. Fink is seeking over $460,000 in fees and back payments, plus damages.

"We simply were not paid money that we earned," Fink tells Rolling Stone. "I finally got tired of the repeated promises by Courtney's business manager that we would be paid and thus filed this lawsuit."

In April, Love's attorneys at Pyror Cashman sought to withdraw their counsel after being hired to defend Love from one of her previous lawyers, Rhonda Holmes.

LIDS Sports Group Acquires Campus Design and Rebrands Double T Zone at Jones AT&T Stadium

Texas Tech apparel and merchandise outlet, Double T Zone, will be rebranded as the Texas Tech Locker Room as announced by LIDS Sports Group today. The Texas Tech Locker Room is located within the East Side Building at Jones AT&T Stadium.

In conjunction with the changes at the Texas Tech Locker Room, LIDS Sports Group also announced the acquisition of longtime Texas Tech apparel outlet Campus Design.

The Campus Design location at 98th Street and Quaker Avenue will be rebranded as the Texas Tech Locker Room.

Men are more often assuming the role of caregiver. In fact, data shows that nearly 35 percent of caregivers to the elderly are men. This is a big increase over previous years.

In the past 12 months, an estimated 65.7 million people in the U.S. have served as unpaid family caregivers to an adult or a child. One out of three caregivers ? about 14.5 million ? are men. That?s a significant number: about 6 percent of all adults in the United States.

And while male caregivers deal with many of the same issues as their female counterparts, they also face some unique challenges.

1. Male caregivers are less likely to be the sole or primary caregiver but are just as dedicated to their role: The duration of their caregiving experience is about four years, the same as women.
2. They?re less likely to provide personal care.
? 24 percent of male caregivers help a loved one get dressed, compared to 28 percent of female caregivers.
? 16 percent help with bathing, versus 30 percent of females.

Some interesting statistics about male caregivers:

? The average age of a male caregiver is 49.
? The average age of the person he assists is 77.
? He usually cares for an aging parent, usually his mom.
? Aging and Alzheimer?s or other types of dementia are the typical reasons the person needs care.

Dr. Edward Thompson, Jr., Professor of Sociology and Director of Gerontology Studies at Holy Cross College, discussed male caregivers of spouses, partners, and the elderly. He emphasized that men provide 40% of the nation?s unpaid care work, and more men (58%) than women are involved in long-distance caregiving. Like their female counterparts, most male caregivers experience some disruption in their lives, particularly with respect to work, social activities, and ?nancial well-being.

Studies also reveal that male caregivers do not verbalize their feelings as willingly as women, and may fail to disclose their burdens to friends, coworkers, physicians, and others. Some male caregivers are embarrassed about helping their wives/partners with personal hygiene and daily activities. Several studies reveal that husband caregivers often worry about not being there for their wives, and feel more powerless, angry, irritable, and likely to use alcohol for self-medication than female caregivers.

Other research suggests that men adapt to caregiving with less adverse impacts on physical and mental health than women. For example, some studies indicate that male caregivers experience less caregiver burden, less anxiety, less role engulfment, and a greater ability to take respite time than do women caregivers. However, research also points to male caregivers? reluctance to use community services that might bene?t them. Such failure to tap into community resources has been attributed to a number of factors, including men?s fear of appearing they cannot handle the situation, unfamiliarity with available services/programs and their bene?ts, lack of other men using support services, and lack of identi?cation with other caregivers.

Tips for the male caregiver:

? Be honest with yourself. Get support and help for the things you find you can?t do. It?s ok to ask for help!
? Be honest with your friends as to what is happening in your life?friends and neighbors will empathize and truly be understanding of your situation. There is no dishonor in a request for help, and there is no reason to feel embarrassed about the diagnosis of your loved one.
? Educate yourself. Talk to the doctor, a social worker, or a geriatric care manager; ask questions of health-care workers. Inquire about outside services that can provide assistance or support.
? If you have the assistance of formal caregivers or health-care workers, know that they can provide visual examples of how to deal with your loved one. Watch how they interpret nonverbal cures while providing assistance and learn to use these cues when you provide care.
? Don?t doubt yourself. Know that stress, anger, and frustration are common feelings among caregivers.
? If the opportunity arises, offer assistance to other male caregivers. As someone who?s been down the road before, you are a valuable resource.

Caregiving men, although fewer in number, are just as dedicated, diligent and determined to help their loved one live the best life that he or she can. Family caregiving remains the backbone of the long-term care system in this country. Men and women every day give of their time and money, and it?s a commitment that we should all appreciate.
