iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S III: Protect Your Bubble Shares What People Really Want

(PRWEB UK) 23 September 2012

Wondering how the two world leaders match up, Protect Your Bubble have taken a look at the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III features in light of what consumers are really after.

MORE POWER: Going head to head strictly on the processing chips, it appears the Galaxy S III is ahead. Running a quad-core CPU on the 1.4GHz Exynos chip, the Galaxy should have plenty of processing muscle. The iPhone 5 promises twice the power of the iPhone 4 with the 6 SoC chip and the memory can be upgraded. Because screen size has to be figured into the equation, this has to be ruled a tie until more people have really put the phones to the processing test.

CAMERA: Both list an 8 megapixel camera, which means a tie. Looking beyond the megapixels, the iPhone 5 offers new image sensors and optics which make taking pictures in low-light situations easier. The Galaxy S III allows still and video at the same time. But the final quality is what matters and in that, Apple has the edge.

OS: Apple has pretty much held is operating systems close and refused to give. Apps must be approved by the company to be sold through the Apple store. Running Android, which has more apps and more developers than iOS, the Galaxy S III would appear to have the edge. But as the most popular apps always have a version for each OS, picking a winner here is a coin toss.

BIG SCREEN - At 4.8 inches, the Galaxy S III has the edge. The iPhone 5 comes in at 4 inches, only a half inch larger than the iPhone 4.

RESOLUTION: At a higher pixel density, the iPhone 5 edges ahead here. The Galaxy S III also comes in with pictures on screen that are not as sharp as the iPhone 5.

BATTERY: A chief complaint on all smartphones is the battery life. Samsung is claiming more battery life than the iPhone 5. Apple is also touting more battery life than the iPhone 4. The one area the Galaxy S III is clearly ahead is that the battery can easily be removed. The iPhone 5 battery can?t be removed.

CONNECTORS: Apple has taken a step backward in the ability to connect a smartphone to other devices. The mini USB requires a not included adaptor. But the Galaxy S III also requires a cable as well. This too is a tie.

The above list has features that every phone has, so what about ones that are phone specific? Protect your bubble also recently conducted a survey of their customers where they ask them about their most desired features. Voice control was the least desired with only 6.5% of people choosing it. A huge 20% chose wireless charging, a feature on the Samsung Galaxy S3, second only to 4G which 23% of people chose. Regardless of which phone is picked and why, they both represent a serious and significant investment. If your mobile phone gets stolen or broken beyond repair, Protect Your Bubble?s gadget insurance will have a replacement sent out to you, which is usually within 48 hours.

Office in Boston's Channel Center Gets $170M Construction Loan ...

September 24, 2012

By Scott Baltic, Contributing Editor

A $170 million construction loan for One Channel Center, an 11-story, 500,000-square-foot Class A office building in Boston?s Channel Center mixed-use project, has been secured by Holliday Fenoglio Fowler LP, the company announced late last week. Details regarding the loan were not disclosed.

The funding was arranged on behalf of the building?s developers, AREA Property Partners (formerly known as Apollo Real Estate Advisors), of New York, and Commonwealth Ventures L.L.C., of South Boston. The HFF team was led by managing director Anthony Cutone and director Porter Terry.

The building is 100 percent leased to State Street Corp. and is paired with an adjacent 960-space parking garage. The project broke ground this past summer and is scheduled for delivery in early 2014.

The larger Channel Center project is a 2 million-square-foot MXD area featuring office, residential and retail uses in Boston?s Seaport District. The area consists of about 100 acres lying south of Summer Street, east of Fort Point Channel and west of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

Other components, according to Commonwealth Ventures, include:

  • ?5 Channel Center: Permits in place for more than 206,000 square feet of renovated and new residential development.
  • 10 and 20 Channel Center: Currently being restored into 250,000 square feet of brick-and-beam office/retail space.
  • 15 Channel Center: Restored as 89 live/work artist studios, two office/retail units and one performance theater.
  • ?25/35 Channel Center: New and restored condominium buildings with 120 residential units, three retail units and underground parking.

Elsewhere in Boston, in the city?s Financial District, Commonwealth Ventures is, with Bentall Kennedy, redeveloping 50 Post Office Square.

PFT: Jennings' recovery takes step back

Brent Celek, Bernard PollardAP

Ravens safety Bernard Pollard isn?t happy about all the mistakes he saw the replacement officials make in Sunday?s loss to the Eagles, and he says it?s time for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to do something about it.

Pollard said on 98.5 The Sports Hub?s Toucher & Rich show that the replacement officials are out of their depth in trying to keep up with a game at NFL speed, and that Goodell needs to show the decisiveness he has shown in other aspects of running the league and bring the officials? lockout to a halt.

?My issue is we have a commissioner that is jumping on board to hammer every other issue down in the NFL . . but we have something at hand that is messing up the integrity of the league and nothing is being done about it,? Pollard said. ?These guys need to be out. I respect them as men. I understand that they were put in a position they can?t handle. But who is going to turn down an NFL officiating gig when you probably get paid more than you got paid in the lingerie league or whatever. Who is going to turn that down? But when it?s all said and done, the commissioner needs to do something about it.?

Pollard said he believes the regular officials are worth everything they?re asking for from the owners, and the replacement officials seem more like overwhelmed fans than professionals.

?These guys are star-struck,? Pollard said. ?I understand they respect us as players, but when you step on that field you can?t be bullied. When you throw that flag, stand by that flag. When you make one of those calls, you point with power, with integrity, and these guys don?t have it.?

Pollard stressed that he believes the replacement refs are doing their best. He just doesn?t think their best is good enough.

?Nobody is perfect,? Pollard said. ?We all make bad plays and people make bad calls. But when it?s all said and done, everything that is happening every single game ? and it?s consistently happening ? something needs to be done about it. When it?s all said and done, this is something the real officials and the league have to iron out. They need to meet now, because this has gone too far.?

Pollard is far from the only one who feels that way, but so far there are few signs of the lockout ending any time soon. Pollard ? and the rest of us ? may need to get used to the replacements.

Maryland is richest state; Mississippi?poorest

By Michael Sauter, Samuel Weigley, Alexander E.M. Hess, Brian Zajac, 24/7 Wall St.

Median household income in the United States declined for the second straight year, according to data released from the U.S. Census Bureau today. Income was $50,502 in 2011, more than 8 percent below the 2007 pre-recession peak.

While the trend is generally down, some states fared far better than others. Median income ranged from $36,919 in Mississippi to $70,004 in Maryland, positions both states have held since before the recession. Based on the 2011 Census Bureau American Community Survey, 24/7 Wall St. identified the states with the highest and lowest median household income.

24/7 Wall St.: The World's Best (And Worst) Economies

Between 2010 and 2011, Vermont was the only state where median income increased. Income fell in 18 states and remained statistically unchanged in 31. ?In Hawaii, which remained one of the wealthiest states in the country, median income decreased by more than $3,000 between 2010 and 2011 alone.?

Not surprisingly, poverty rates continued to be high. The percentage of Americans living below the poverty line increased in 17 states between 2010 and 2011, the third consecutive increase for ten of these states. Of the states with the lowest income, eight had among the 10 highest poverty rates. Mississippi had the highest poverty rate in the country, at 22.6 percent of residents, compared to the national rate of 15.9 percent.

The poorest states in the country are almost entirely found in the South, with the exception of New Mexico. The wealthiest states can be found all across the country, including three in New England, four in the Mid-Atlantic, and two outside the contiguous 48 states.

Of course, not all residents of the wealthiest states earn as much as the median. According to the Census Bureau?s Gini Coefficient, which measures income inequality, there was a significant increase in the divide between the rich and poor in 20 states. The measure remained unchanged in the rest.

Though income inequality affects rich and poor states alike, the poorest states struggle with it most. Inequality was high in only three rich states: California, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Meanwhile, with the exception of West Virginia, all of the poorest states had among the highest income inequality scores, with six in the top 15.

In an interview with 24/7 Wall St., Brookings Institution fellow Elizabeth Kneebone explained that income inequality at a state level is often influenced by differences between the state?s high- and low-income cities and between urban and rural areas. ?These are metropolitan economies that drive a lot of these [state] trends.? This was especially the case in California, where the Bay Area?s wealthy suburbs have incomes fueled by the tech industry and the low-income areas in other parts of the states are agricultural-based economies.

At least one positive development involves health insurance coverage, which increased in 37 states. While the poorest states improved, coverage remained relatively low. Three of the poorest states were among the 10 with the lowest coverage. In New Mexico, nearly 20 percent were not insured in 2011, much higher than the 15.1 percent national average. In the wealthiest states, coverage was among the highest, with four states having greater than 90 percent insured. ??

24/7 Wall St.: Brands That Will Disappear in 2013

While most of the states with the lowest incomes suffer from weak economies, unemployment was not a significant problem. Only two states were among the worst 10 for unemployment in 2011. In fact, five of the worst-off states had unemployment rates lower than the national rate of 8.9 percent last year. In Oklahoma, one of the poorest states, unemployment was 6.2 percent. In the states with the highest median incomes, the results were similarly varied.

According to Kneebone, it is not a surprise that unemployment and income appear unrelated. ?"Earnings for middle and lower-wage workers have fallen or stagnated over time," Kneebone explained. "So you can have a situation where jobs are being created ... but the types of jobs matter. If those are jobs that pay low wages, even if you?re working full time, that might not be enough to lift you above the poverty line.?

To identify the states with the highest and lowest median household income, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed state data on income, poverty, and health insurance from the U.S. Census Bureau?s 2011 American Community Survey (ACS). Based on Census treatment, median household income for all years is adjusted for inflation. We also reviewed unemployment data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and additional 2011 ACS data on individual cities. Because the cost of living has a direct bearing income, 24/7 Wall St. considered cost of living data for Q4 2011 from the Council for Community and Economic Research.

The Richest States

1. Maryland

  • ?Median household income: $70,004
  • ?Population: 5,828,289 (19th highest)
  • ?Unemployment rate: 7 percent (15th lowest)
  • ?Percent below poverty line: 10.1 percent (2nd lowest)

Maryland, which has had the highest median income of all states since 2006, was the only state in the country to have a median income above $70,000 in 2011. The state?s 10.1 percent was well below the national rate of 15.9 percent. Furthermore, a sizable portion of the population is earning well above the median income. Maryland is one of three states, along with New Jersey and Connecticut, where more than 10 percent of families earned more than $200,000 in 2011. Across the U.S., only 5.6 percent of families made more than $200,000 in 2011.

2. Alaska

  • ?Median household income: $67,825
  • ?Population: 722,718 (4th lowest)
  • ?Unemployment rate: 7.6 percent (22nd lowest)
  • ?Percent below poverty line: 10.5 percent (4th lowest)

In 2011, Alaska moved ahead of New Jersey to take the spot of the state with the second-highest median household income in the country. The state benefits from its vast natural resources, particularly oil, natural gas, and timber. Since 1957, the state has collected nearly $100 billion in taxes from oil and gas companies, and Alaska oil production has accounted for more than 13 percent of total U.S. production. Most residents reap the benefits from these payments. Income inequality in the state is the second-lowest in the country. Just 3 percent of Alaskan families earned less than $10,000 per year compared to the 5.1 percent nationwide. Meanwhile, despite the state?s high median income, just 5 percent of families earned more than $200,000 per year.

3. New Jersey

  • ?Median household income: $67,458
  • ?Population: 8,821,155 (11th highest)
  • ?Unemployment rate: 9.3 percent (14th highest)
  • ?Percent below poverty line: 10.4 percent (3rd lowest)

In New Jersey, 10.9 percent of families earned more than $200,000 last year and just 10.4 percent of residents lived below the poverty line, fewer than all states except for New Hampshire. Still, there were areas in the state where poverty was more widespread. In Newark, 31.6 percent of residents lived below the poverty line, while Paterson?s poverty rate was 28.9 percent. In contrast to the state as a whole, families in Newark were more than 16 times more likely to earn less than $10,000 than over $200,000 a year. Similarly, in Paterson, 16.2 percent of families earned under $10,000 per year, while just 1.4 percent earned more than $200,000 annually.

The Poorest States

1. Mississippi

  • ?Median household income: $36,919
  • ?Population: 2,978,512 (20th lowest)
  • ?Unemployment rate: 10.7 percent (4th highest)
  • ?Percent below poverty line: 22.6 percent (the highest)

The median income of the poorest state in the country, Mississippi, was just slightly less than 53 percent of the median income of Maryland, the richest state. Mississippi?s median income--like many states-- fell each year between 2008 and 2011, dropping $2,677 during that time. Not only did Mississippi have the highest poverty rate in the country, but 7.8 percent of Mississippi families made less than $10,000 in 2011, which was also the lowest rate in the country. While unemployment declined in most states between 2010 and 2011, Mississippi?s actually rose 0.2 percentage points, one of only two states to see an increase in unemployment.

2. West Virginia

  • ?Median household income: $38,482
  • ?Population: 1,855,364 (14th lowest)
  • ?Unemployment rate: 8 percent (tied-25th lowest)
  • ?Percent below poverty line: 18.6 percent (10th highest)

West Virginia?s median income of $38,482 was well off the median income of $40,093 in 2007. The state?s unemployment rate of 8 percent was well below the 8.9 percent nationwide. But, like Kentucky, a softening mining sector in 2012 could weaken West Virginia?s economy. The proportion of West Virginia residents without health insurance grew 4.9 percent, the third-largest increase in the U.S. Fortunately for cash-strapped residents, although the state?s overall cost of living is in the middle of the pack compared to all other states, the cost of groceries is the third lowest in the country.

3. Arkansas

  • ?Median household income: $38,758
  • ?Population: 2,937,979 (19th lowest)
  • ?Unemployment rate: 8 percent (tied-25th lowest)
  • ?Percent below poverty line: 19.5 percent (4th highest)

While the national median household income fell to $50,502 in 2011, Arkansas was just one of three states where median income remained below $40,000 for the year. Despite an unemployment rate of 8 percent in 2011, nearly one percentage point below the national rate, the 19.5 percent of families lived below the poverty line, one of the nation?s highest rates. Poverty was slightly less of a problem in Little Rock, the state?s largest city, which had a 16.4 percent poverty rate and a median income of $40,976. Despite having the third-lowest cost of health care nationwide at the end of 2011, 17.1 percent of residents lived without health insurance last year--well above the national figure of 15.1 percent.

PFT: Ravens safety tells Goodell to bring back refs

Washington Redskins v St Louis RamsGetty Images

After Rams running back Steven Jackson left Sunday?s win over the Redskins in the second quarter, it widely was believed that he?d been benched for spiking the football in frustration and drawing a 15-yard penalty.

After the game, coach Jeff Fisher said that Jackson has an injured groin, but that he could have re-entered the game.

Regardless of whether Jackson could have returned to the game, he has now missed two days of practice.

?He did not practice today and we?ll have him on the injury report for you on Friday,? Fisher told the media on Thursday.

Fisher added that he doesn?t have a policy that requires a player to practice in order to play.? Jackson said he has played with worse injuries.

?I?m not 100 percent, but day-to-day,? Jackson said. ?The injury is not as significant as we once thought it was and we?re just going to go from there. I still have the three days before the game, I believe. Each and every day buys me time.?

It?d be interesting to know when the Rams specifically thought the injury was significant.? The fact that the Rams gave no in-game injury update on Jackson could pique the league?s interest in that regard, too.

Nine years ago, former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan was fined for reporting during a game that quarterback Jake Plummer had left with a concussion when, in reality, Plummer had a separated shoulder.? Shanahan said at the time that he lied in order to conceal the true nature of the injury from the Chargers, in the event the team?s other quarterback (Steve Beuerlein) had gotten injured, forcing Plummer back into the game.? (And, yes, in 2003 a guy could re-enter a game with a concussion.)

?To share with somebody that Jake has a separated shoulder and could not throw and our quarterback goes down, we have a good chance to lose the football game,? Shanahan said at the time.

In this case, with Shanahan on the other sideline, Fisher likely didn?t want the Redskins to think that Jackson was injured in any way, in the event that he had to re-enter the game.? And despite the friendship between Shanahan and Fisher, Shanahan should be asking 345 Park Avenue whether Fisher will be making the same involuntary contribution to the NFL?s charities that Shanahan once did.

Emmy nominees dish on dream guest-starring roles

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Christina Hendricks, Julie Bowen and Jesse Tyler Ferguson have earned repeat Emmy nods for their work on their regular shows, but that doesn't mean they don't have their eye on some sweet guest-starring gigs on other top programs.

Producers, take note: Here's a look at the shows these and other Emmy nominees would love to try.

? "I'd love to do a guest spot on 'Downton Abbey.' I'm absolutely in love with 'Homeland.' I think it's amazing. I would do anything they asked me." ? Hendricks, nominated for the third time for playing Joan Harris on "Mad Men."

? "Oh God, I don't know. 'Dynasty?' I just want to wear really big shoulder pads and have crazy big hair." ? Bowen, who won the supporting actress award for her role as Claire Dunphy on "Modern Family" and is nominated again this year.

? "I'm a huge fan of 'Parks and Recreation,' but I think I'd like to do something totally different, like 'American Horror Story.' Oh sure, I'll get killed. That sounds fun. Or I'll play a nun, a spooky nun." ? Ferguson, enjoying his third consecutive nomination for playing Mitchell Pritchett on "Modern Family."

? "I would love to do a part on 'Boardwalk Empire.' I'd have to play some guy that comes out from the West, a new hitter in town." ? Bill Paxton, nominated for playing Randall McCoy in the miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys."

? "'Homeland' would be at the top of my list. It depends how it goes in series two. Maybe an agent? I'd like to play an FBI or CIA agent." ? Joanne Froggatt, nominated for supporting actress for "Downton Abbey."

? "I would love to do a guest role on 'Girls.' That show is about as good as it gets." ? Max Greenfield, up for supporting actor in the comedy "New Girl."

? "I have a classical background. I would love to be on 'Game of Thrones' as some kind of queen coming in to challenge the Starks ? wearing all those amazing costumes and wielding a sword. The actors are so good. That would be a dream." ? Brenda Strong, nominated for her voiceover work on "Desperate Housewives."

? "'Game of Thrones,' but I'm an American, so I don't think that would happen. For that show, I'd go to the moon." ? Sarah Paulson, up for her supporting role in the HBO movie "Game Change."

The Emmy Awards will be presented Sunday at the Nokia Theatre and broadcast live on ABC.

'Housing recovery is for real': Sales at highest level since 2010

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A jump in sales of previously occupied homes and further gains in home construction suggest the U.S. housing recovery is gaining momentum.

Sales of previously occupied homes rose 7.8 percent in August from July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.82 million, the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday. That's the highest level since May 2010, when sales were aided by a federal home-buying tax credit.

At the same time, builders broke ground on 2.3 percent more homes and apartments in August than July. The Commerce Department said the annual rate of construction rose to a seasonally adjusted 750,000. The increase was driven the best rate of single-family home construction since April 2010.

The pair of reports comes amid other signs of steady progress in the housing market after years of stagnation. New-home sales are up, builder confidence is at its highest level in more than six years and increases in home prices appear to be sustainable.

"The U.S. housing recovery is for real," said Sal Guatieri, an economist at BMO Capital Markets, in a note to clients. "Great affordability, pent-up demand and strong investor interest in rental units are driving the market."

The broader economy is also likely to benefit. When home prices rise, Americans typically feel wealthier and spend more. Consumer spending drives 70 percent of the economic growth.

And the Federal Reserve's plan to spend $40 billion a month on mortgage-backed securities to keep mortgage rates low "can only help," Guatieri added.

Still, home sales and housing starts are rising from depressed levels. Sales of previously occupied homes remain below the more than 5.5 million that economists consider consistent with a healthy market.

The number of first-time homebuyers, who are critical to a housing rebound, slipped to 31 percent from 34 percent. In a typical market, that figure is usually closer to 40 percent. Strict credit standards are making it harder for many first-time buyers to qualify for mortgages.

More Americans appear to be taking advantage of near-record low mortgage rates and prices that are, on average, much lower than they were six years ago.

Sales might be higher if more homes were available, the Realtors' group said. The limited supply is helping to lift prices. There were 2.47 million homes available for sale in August. It would take just over six months to exhaust that supply at the current sales pace. That's the typical pace in a healthy market.

Homes are selling more quickly than a year ago. The median amount of time that a home spent on the market was 70 days in August, the Realtors' group said. A year ago, the median timeframe was 92 days a year ago.

The median home price dipped in August to $187,400, but that is 9.5 percent higher than August 2011. That's the largest year-over-year price increase since January 2006.

One reason for the price gain is that sales of foreclosed homes and so-called short sales have declined. A short sale is when the seller owes more on the mortgage than the home is worth. Both foreclosure and short sales occur at steep discounts and can drag down overall home prices.

The lower supply of homes has boosted demand for new homes, which has made builders more confident in future sales.

Applications for building permits, a good sign of future construction, dipped in August to an annual rate of 803,000. Still, permits reached a four-year high of 811,000 in July, which was revised higher.

"Since builders are not taking out permits because it is fun to visit their local government office and pay fees, we can conclude that there should be a solid rise in construction in the months to come," said Joel Naroff, chief economist for Naroff Economics Advisors.

Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics, said home construction should add about 0.3 percentage point to overall economic growth this year.

"Housing is clearly in recovery mode," Sullivan said.

Study links BPA, obesity in kids | Gymrat Fitness

NEW YORK | Tue Sep 18, 2012 10:07am EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Kids and teens that had higher levels of the chemical bisphenol A in their urine were more likely to be overweight or obese, in a new nationally-representative U.S. study.

The findings can?t prove BPA ? which has been banned from baby bottles but is still found in aluminum cans and other types of packaging ? causes kids to gain weight.

But previous studies have also suggested a link between the chemical, a type of synthetic estrogen, and body weight in adulthood. And researchers say earlier exposures could be more influential.

?Children are uniquely vulnerable to environmental chemicals,? said Dr. Leonardo Trasande from the New York University School of Medicine, who worked on the study.

It?s possible, he said, that ingesting extra BPA could throw off young people?s hormonal balance and disrupt their metabolism. But for now, that?s just a theory.

?Unhealthy diet and poor physical activity are still the biggest causes of childhood obesity,? Trasande told Reuters Health.

He and his colleagues analyzed data from a nationwide health and nutrition survey conducted between 2003 and 2008. Close to 3,000 kids age six to 19 were weighed, measured and had their urine tested for BPA. They also answered a range of diet and lifestyle questions.

In total, about one-third of the kids were overweight and 18 percent were obese.

The average kid had close to three nanograms ? three billionths of a gram ? of BPA in every milliliter of urine.

The researchers found that just over 10 percent of kids with the lowest BPA levels were obese, compared to 22 percent of those with the highest BPA, according to results published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. That was after taking into account how much kids ate overall, as well as their age, race and gender.

Trasande said he was struck by the strength of that link. But it still doesn?t mean extra BPA in kids? diets was responsible for their extra pounds.

There are a couple of other theories, according to Trasande.

?Obese children could ingest food that has higher BPA content ? it could be what we call reverse causation,? he said. Or, ?They could have higher BPA stores in their bodies and release more BPA. Those are both very plausible explanations.?

Still, he said the findings point to hormone-like chemicals as one factor to consider in the rise of childhood obesity, after diet and exercise.

Karin Michels, an epidemiologist from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, agreed there is ?accumulating evidence? that BPA may be linked to obesity and related diseases like diabetes ? although the majority of that research still comes from animals.

Her own study found a link between urinary BPA and adult weight, based on the same health and nutrition survey used by Trasande?s team.

?We still don?t really know how safe bisphenol A is,? Michels, who wasn?t involved in the new report, told Reuters Health.

While more research is underway, Michels said it makes sense to avoid polycarbonate bottles, aluminum cans and other products containing BPA if there are other options.

?I think we should be on the safe side,? she said. But, ?I don?t think we have to panic about it at this point.?

Women speak less when they're outnumbered

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? New experiments in group decision making show that having a seat at the table is very different than having a voice.

Scholars at Brigham Young University and Princeton examined whether women speak less than men when a group collaborates to solve a problem. In most groups that they studied, the time that women spoke was significantly less than their proportional representation -- amounting to less than 75 percent of the time that men spoke.

The new study is published by the top academic journal in political science, American Political Science Review.

"Women have something unique and important to add to the group, and that's being lost at least under some circumstances," said Chris Karpowitz, the lead study author and a political scientist at BYU.

There is an exception to this rule of gender participation, however. The time inequality disappeared when researchers instructed participants to decide by a unanimous vote instead of majority rule.

Results showed that the consensus-building approach was particularly empowering for women who were outnumbered by men in their group. Study co-author Tali Mendelberg of Princeton says these findings apply to many different settings.

"In school boards, governing boards of organizations and firms, and legislative committees, women are often a minority of members and the group uses majority rule to make its decisions," Mendelberg said. "These settings will produce a dramatic inequality in women's floor time and in many other ways. Women are less likely to be viewed and to view themselves as influential in the group and to feel that their 'voice is heard.'"

For their experiments, Karpowitz and Mendelberg recruited people to be part of a group and discuss the best way to distribute money they earned together from a hypothetical task. In all, the researchers observed 94 groups of at least five people.

On average, groups deliberated for 25 minutes before settling the matter. Participants voted by secret ballot, but half of the groups followed majority rule while the other half decided only with a unanimous vote.

Notably, the groups arrived at different decisions depending on women's participation -- swinging the group's stance on the level of generosity given to the lowest member of the group.

"When women participated more, they brought unique and helpful perspectives to the issue under discussion," Karpowitz said. "We're not just losing the voice of someone who would say the same things as everybody else in the conversation."

Canon debuts full-frame 6D and luxury compacts at Photokina

Canon announced a number of new cameras Monday at Photokina, a major European camera show. Among them are the 6D, a prosumer full-frame DSLR, and a few smaller cameras aimed at enthusiasts.

Last week saw the introduction of Nikon's D600, which brought full-frame cameras to their lowest price point yet. Full-frame offers a few powerful benefits for pro and enthusiast photographers, but historically such cameras have cost at least $3000; The D600, and now the 6D, make the luxuries of full-frame slightly more accessible.

The $2,099?6D has a 20-megapixel sensor and an extremely wide ISO range (it will shoot at up to 102400, allowing for work in near-dark conditions), and features built-in Wi-Fi and GPS.

Potential buyers are already comparing it to the D600, and while it does have potentially superior low-light performance and a slightly better screen, the Nikon beats the Canon on autofocus and viewfinder quality. But until actual tests?are done by the experts, such comparisons are purely speculative.

Canon also announced new devices in its S and G series of high-end compact cameras. The $450?S110 builds on the success of the S95 and S100, which have been among the best-reviewed and most popular point-and-shoots of the last couple years. The new version adds a touchscreen, Wi-Fi and a slightly updated sensor. It retains the fast f/2.0 5x zoom lens and the other features that made the other S series cameras so popular.

The G15 is the next device in the G series, which bridges the gap between point-and-shoot and DSLR by taking the fixed lens of the former and adding the manual controls of the latter. The price is in between, too, at $500. New in the latest camera is an updated sensor, a more high-resolution screen (though it no longer folds out), and an improved lens that opens all the way up to f/1.8 on the wide end and f/2.8 at a 5x zoom.

The S110 and G15 will be available in October, and the 6D is expected to ship in December.

Crows can 'reason' about causes

Tool-making crows have the ability to "reason", say scientists.

In an experiment, researchers found that crows were more likely to forage when they could attribute changes in their environment to a human presence.

This behaviour may suggest "complex cognition", according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Until now the ability to make inferences based on causes has been attributed to humans but not animals.

The study was a collaboration between researchers from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, the University of Cambridge, UK and the University of Vienna, Austria.

In their experiment eight wild crows used tools to remove food from a box.

Inside the enclosure there was a stick and the crows were tested in two separate series of events that both involved the stick moving.

In one instance a human entered the hide and the stick moved. In the other, the stick still moved but no human entered.

On the occasions when no human was observed entering the hide, the crows abandoned their efforts to probe for food using a tool more frequently than they did when a human had been observed.

According to the scientists, the study proved that crows attributed the stick's movement to human presence.

The results indicated that neither age nor sex was a predictor of the behaviour with juveniles, males and females displaying the same behaviour.

Scientists said that the kind of "reasoned inference" shown by the New Caledonian crows under these controlled conditions could also be utilised in the wild to anticipate danger or food.

The study is the first to suggest that animals have the ability to make reasoned inferences, although scientists added that the phenomenon could be more common among animals than previously thought.

(AP) ? U.S. stocks are slipping in early trading Monday following a surge late last week.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 20 points at 13,573 in the first half-hour of trading. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell three points to 1,463.The Nasdaq composite lost nearly 11 points to 3,173.

U.S. stocks are coming off a rally last week that sent the S&P 500 to its highest level in nearly five years. The Federal Reserve on Thursday announced new measures to encourage people to borrow and spend more. Many believe central banks in Europe and Asia will follow suit.

In European trading, Germany's DAX is down 0.2 percent while France's CAC-40 dropped 0.6 percent.

Apple rose $7 to $698.35, a new high. The stock market's most valuable company said that preorders for its iPhone 5 are running at double the level of preorders for the previous version.

In economic news, the September Empire State Manufacturing Survey suggested that conditions for New York manufacturers continued to weaken.

The general business conditions index slipped five points to minus 10.4, its second consecutive negative reading. The new orders index fell nine points to minus 14.0, its third straight negative reading. Both reached their lowest levels in almost two years.

Also on Monday, China filed a World Trade Organization case challenging U.S. anti-dumping measures on billions of dollars of kitchen appliances, paper and other goods, further straining trade relations as global demand weakens.

Earlier, the Obama administration said it would file its own WTO case this week. It says China improperly subsidizes exports of cars and car parts.

On Tuesday, the National Association of Home Builders releases its survey for September sales. The government follows on Wednesday with data on both housing starts and existing home sales.
