Defiant Iran plans to speed up nuclear fuel work

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran has announced plans to install and operate advanced uranium enrichment machines, in what would be a technological leap allowing it to significantly speed up activity the West fears could be put to developing a nuclear weapon.

In a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Tehran said it would introduce new centrifuges to its main enrichment plant near the central town of Natanz, according to an IAEA communication to member states seen by Reuters.

The defiant move will increase concerns in the West and Israel about Iran's nuclear ambitions, which Tehran says are entirely peaceful, and may further complicate efforts by big powers to negotiate curbs on its enrichment program.

The United States said on Thursday that installation of new Iranian centrifuges would be a "provocative step".

"This does not come as a surprise," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters in Washington. He said the introduction of these machines would result in Iran's further isolation by the international community.

Enriched uranium can fuel nuclear power plants, Iran's stated aim, or provide material for bombs if refined to a high degree, which the West suspects is Tehran's underlying purpose.

A new generation centrifuge could, if successfully deployed, refine uranium several times faster than the model Iran now has.

"It is certainly a provocation to increase any enrichment capacity at all," a senior Western diplomat said.

It was not clear how many of the upgraded centrifuges Iran aimed to put in place at Natanz, which is designed for tens of thousands of machines, but the wording of the IAEA's note implied it could be up to roughly 3,000.

Analysts say U.N. sanctions have limited Iran's access abroad to special steel and other components needed to produce sophisticated enrichment machines in larger numbers. Iran says it is able to manufacture them domestically.

Iran has for years been trying to develop centrifuges more efficient than the erratic 1970s IR-1 model it now uses, but their introduction for full-scale production has been dogged by delays and technical hurdles, experts and diplomats say.

Iran's announcement coincides with wrangling between Tehran and six world powers over when and where to meet next, delaying a resumption of talks aimed at reaching a negotiated deal and avert a new Middle East war.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who handles contacts with Iran on behalf of the big powers, said in Brussels on Thursday that she was "confident there will be a meeting soon," without elaborating.

The powers - the United States, France, Germany, Britain, Russia and China - want Iran to scale back its enrichment to ensure it remains within peaceful dimensions and submit to stricter U.N. nuclear inspections.

"We along with the other U.N. Security Council members have called upon the Iranians to freeze enrichment work during negotiations," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.

Western states have intensified the sanctions pressure on Iran over the past year, targeting its lifeline oil sector. This has inflicted increasing damage to Iran's economy but its clerical leadership is showing no sign of backing down.

Israel, believed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed state, has hinted at possible military action against Iran if sanctions and diplomacy fail to resolve the nuclear stand-off.

Signaling impatience, Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said: "While the world continues to talk about setting a time and place for the next meeting with Iran, Tehran continues to race toward building a nuclear bomb."

GAME CHANGER?

Iran asserts a right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes and has repeatedly refused to halt the work, a stance underlined anew by its new centrifuge plans. Centrifuges spin at supersonic speed to increase the ratio of uranium's fissile isotope.

Iran said it would use the new model at a unit in Natanz, where it is now refining uranium to a fissile concentration of up to five percent, according to the IAEA's communication.

The IAEA "received a letter from the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) dated 23 January 2013 informing the Agency that 'centrifuge machines type IR2m will be used in Unit A-22' at the Fuel Enrichment Plant (FEP) at Natanz," it said.

The IAEA said it had asked Iran, in a letter earlier this week, to provide technical and other information about the plans. A unit can house more than 3,000 centrifuges.

About 10,400 IR-1 centrifuges were installed at Natanz as of late last year, an IAEA report said in November, but diplomats in the Austrian capital said they expected a jump in that figure in the next update from the U.N. agency due around February 22.

The nuclear watchdog, whose mission it is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons in the world, regularly inspects Natanz and other, declared Iranian nuclear sites.

Nuclear expert Mark Fitzpatrick of the International Institute for Strategic Studies think-tank said that employing more efficient centrifuges at Natanz could be "a most unfortunate game changer," depending on how many there were.

"Using the IR-2m in large numbers would enable Iran to enrich uranium much faster," Fitzpatrick said.

Iran says it refines uranium to power a planned network of nuclear energy plants. But just one of these plants would take many years to complete, raising many questions abroad about the motivations of a major oil and gas producer speeding up its accumulation of enriched uranium and, since early 2010, refining to a level beyond the 5 percent suitable for civilian energy.

What we know about BlackBerry 10

Despite -- or rather thanks to -- major delays in releasing BlackBerry 10, RIM has let quite a bit slip about its upcoming operating system and related BB10 devices. We've had more than a year to absorb leaks, rumors and official information, after all, so it's no surprise that we have a very good idea of what to expect when Waterloo pulls back the curtain on January 30th. That doesn't mean things are as plain as day, though; the deluge of blurrycam shots and carrier screens have provided an almost indigestible amount of information about BB10, and we don't blame you if you can't keep the story straight. We're here to parse the madness, though, so read on to find out what to expect at tomorrow's launch event.

Software

Touch keyboard with predictive input

The first BB10 handset likely won't sport a physical keyboard, but that doesn't mean you should expect a subpar typing experience. RIM's on-screen layout will boast quite a few enhancements to compete with SwiftKey and other similar input options. For instance, the company has demoed predictive typing; press on a letter, and a selection of likely words will hover over the corresponding character ("hey" when you hit H, for example). To pick one of the predicted words, you simply swipe up on it. The keyboard will learn and adapt to your linguistic habits, so you can expect more accurate suggestions over time. In addition to predictive input, the on-screen layout features intuitive gestures such as swiping to the left to delete text and swiping from the lower left to minimize the keyboard. Other gestures include swiping from the bottom to reveal numbers and special characters.

Timeline lens, camera filters

At BlackBerry World 2012, RIM showed us its take on fancy camera software: the "timeline lens," which uses Scalado's Rewind technology to capture frames even before you hit the shutter. This means you can cycle back through the shooter's cache if you miss an image by a second or two.

If The Gadget Masters website, which posted a hands-on video with a "pre-production Z10," is to be believed, we can also expect photo-editing software courtesy of Scalado, including Instagram-style filters and options such as transform, brightness / white balance adjustment, rotate and aspect ratio customization.

User interface with Peek, flow gestures

One of the most anticipated aspects of BlackBerry 10 is the user interface's focus on multitasking. The aptly named Peek feature, showcased at BlackBerry Jam last September, lets users view apps running in the background by simply swiping from the left or right. From there, users can either return to their previous task or swipe back to go into previously launched programs. At least in theory, this is meant to provide a more fluid app-switching experience than the task list à la webOS and Android.

Back in May, RIM officially previewed the BB10 home screen, which will include an app grid that displays all currently running programs. From here, swiping to the right will bring up the full launcher, and gesturing to the left will bring you to the unified inbox. Here as well, you can use Peek to view recent notifications and any currently running applications, and then swipe to backtrack to the main hub. Users can also minimize a given window to see new notifications. We also got a hands-on look at the UI in action when we met with RIM Principal Architect Gary Klassen last June -- check out our video.

Security features, BYOD

Historically, RIM's handsets have been almost synonymous with the BYOD (bring your own device) movement, so it's no surprise that BB10 devices will come with corporate-minded features on board. First off, the OS has FIP 140-2 certification, meaning it meets the security and encryption requirements of government agencies and enterprises.

BB10 devices will also have BlackBerry Balance, which partitions RIM's phones into separate work and personal profiles. To toggle between these two modes, you simply pull down from the app icon grid. You'll see different applications listed depending on which profile you're in, and you can run applications simultaneously in both profiles. For instance, you can have the browser open on the corporate side, and it will adhere to your IT desk's policies, and on the personal side it will run without these restrictions.

Apps

One of many tidbits we've gleaned from the leaked BB10 training manual is that RIM is promising some 70,000 QNX apps in the BlackBerry World store at launch. And indeed, Waterloo has been aggressively courting developers, offering a $10,000 guarantee for approved apps that make less than 10k in the first year. The company also held "Portathon" events to drum up app submissions with a cash incentive. One such contest netted 15,000 entries in less than 38 hours.

In addition to seeking new applications, RIM has invested time and money into securing the top names for its platform. Rest assured that a native Facebook app will be on board at launch, as will Foursquare. We also have good reason to believe that Google Talk and Twitter will be integrated into the unified inbox.

The devices

The all-touch BlackBerry Z10

Back in November, CEO Thorsten Heins told us that a full-touch device will be RIM's way of gaining back market share, as the company's smartphone success to date has been in the QWERTY category. Hence, the first BB10 device will feature an on-screen rather than a physical keyboard.

All signs point to the first flagship device being the full-touch BlackBerry Z10, a phone in the higher-end L-Series line. We've seen that model name come up repeatedly, in RIM marketing materials and most recently in a screen cap from Verizon's website.

Leaked specs for the Z10 match up quite closely with the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha we first saw last May. Unveiled at BlackBerry World, the device sported a 4.2-inch, 1,280 x 768 display with 16GB of internal storage. Rumors and leaks about the Z10 have echoed that same set of specifications -- save for 2GB rather than 1GB of RAM -- and we now hear it will run a 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor under the hood. Whether that CPU spec turns out to be true or not, it's safe to assume the phone will pack a dual-core chip.

Lower-end and QWERTY models coming soon

From the beginning, Heins has made it clear that RIM's BB10 strategy is to target the more "premium" end of the market first, though "at least six" handsets in total will debut in 2013. We can expect mid-range and lower-end devices in this batch; Heins said a physical keyboard model will be released soon after the first BB10 touch device, and this QWERTY model should fall under the N-Series. Physical keyboards have arguably been RIM's bread and butter, and while the company clearly finessed its on-screen input for the all-touch Z10, it's unclear whether QWERTY models will receive a keyboard revamp as well.

We'd be remiss to move on without mentioning the PlayBook. Though we don't know if any new models are on the horizon, RIM has confirmed that existing versions of its biz-focused tablet will receive the upgrade to BlackBerry 10. Of course, this is possible because the PlayBook is a QNX-based device.

Carrier support

Unsurprisingly, most of the major carriers will be on board when BlackBerry 10 hits the market. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon have all confirmed that they'll be carrying BB10 devices at launch, and Sprint recently spoke up to reassure customers that it will be on board by "later this year." UK carriers, including Three, O2 and EE, also confirmed that they'll offer BB10 products in early 2013. Additionally, in our interview with Heins, he confirmed that BB10 devices, including the QWERTY handset, will support 4G LTE.

Wrap-up

Clearly, we won't be walking blindly into the BlackBerry 10 launch event, as both RIM itself and countless leaks have furnished us with plenty of details about what devices and software features to expect. Still, nothing is for certain until Waterloo announces it on stage, so you'll want to tune into our liveblog when the action goes down tomorrow.

The Right Justified Home ScreenReader WharlsScreenName has a very minimal setup with two handy launchers for all the most important apps, justified to the right of the screen. Here's what you need to recreate it.

    WharlsScreenName is using:

    • ROM: AOKP (PUB build) for the circle-cog battery meter, resized and recolored nav bar.
    • Launcher: Nova Launcher (though Apex would work too)
    • Date Widget: Minimalistic Text
    • Dock Letter Icons: Simple Text
    • Circle Launcher for the apps, resized to a small dot. On the left is another Circle Launcher with important contacts inside.
    • This wallpaper. This look works pretty well with any wallpaper that has darker shades to the top and bottom, but this Winter one fits especially well?the stars and Circle Launcher dots blend nicely.

The screen to the right has informational widgets (weather, calendar), the screen to the left has a more standard icons & folders view of less important apps.

Singer Frank Ocean wants Chris Brown charged over brawl

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rising R&B artist Frank Ocean wants fellow singer Chris Brown prosecuted following a brawl over a parking space at a Los Angeles-area recording studio, authorities said on Monday.

Brown is serving five years probation for assaulting his on-and-off girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 and risks having his probation revoked should charges be filed.

In the incident on Sunday, sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a fight involving six men in West Hollywood. The deputies cited witnesses as saying that the Grammy-winning Brown, 23, punched Ocean during the brief altercation.

No charges have yet been filed, but Ocean "is desirous of prosecution in this incident," said Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Ocean, 25, who is nominated for best new artist and best record for "Thinkin Bout You" at the Grammys in February, said on Twitter on Sunday night that he "got jumped by Chris and a couple guys." He said this resulted in a cut finger.

A representative for Brown has yet to comment.

The "Look at me Now" singer has attempted to rebuild his career and public image since 2009, but his entourage and that of Canadian rapper Drake were involved in a June 2012 brawl in a New York nightclub. No arrests or charges were brought in that case.

Brown and Ocean are both nominated in the best urban contemporary album category at the Grammys, which take place on February 10 in Los Angeles.

Former beauty queen pleads guilty in grisly case

Jessie Stensland / South Whidbey Record

Peggy Sue Thomas, a former beauty queen charged with first-degree murder in the 2003 killing of a 32-year-old man, listens to her attorney Craig Platt at a hearing last week in Island County Superior Court in Washington state.

By Isolde Raftery, Staff Writer, NBC News

Two days after Christmas 2003: A man walking his dog through the woods on Whidbey Island in Washington state spots a yellow Chevy sports utility vehicle, its door open, its driver with a bullet in the head.

The victim is Russel Douglas, 32, and when police search his cell phone records, according to court documents, they find that he has recently been in touch with Peggy Sue Thomas ? a 6-foot-tall, single mother of two who was crowned Ms. Washington in 2000.

    South Whidbey Record

Peggy Sue Thomas was crowned Ms. Washington state in 2000. She attended the national competition in Las Vegas that same year.

She won the evening gown division at the national competition, where she proclaimed, according to a profile in the Seattle Weekly, that the greatest ethical challenge facing women was ?raising children with morals, even with all the violence, sex and drugs in the media.?

Years after she graced the national stage with that sobering message, prosecutors alleged that she lured Russel Douglas, the estranged husband of a longtime friend, to the woods under the pretense of giving him a Christmas gift. There, investigators claimed, her lover shot Douglas point-blank.

On Thursday, a week before her first-degree murder trial was scheduled to begin, Thomas, 47, pleaded guilty to first-degree rendering of criminal assistance with three additional years for the involvement of a gun ? a crime that will likely result in a four-year sentence. That?s the maximum amount of time under the state?s sentencing guidelines for that crime.

    Read the charging document (.pdf)

Thomas has, by all accounts, lived a storied life.

She was born on Whidbey Island in a busy home filled with stepsiblings and half siblings, including a brother who was later killed in an Alaska bar by a man he had beaten in an arm-wrestling contest, according to the Seattle Weekly. Her stepmother was murdered. A sister later hanged herself.

Thomas attended beauty school, did a stint in the Navy and married several men, including an Alaska businessman whose horse, Mine that Bird, won the Kentucky Derby in 2009. She drove a Lexus with a vanity plate that read, according to the Weekly: FIRYRED, presumably a nod to her auburn-colored hair.

Island County Detective Mark Plumberg wrote in a statement that when he called Thomas after finding Russel Douglas dead at the wheel, she told him that she was a limousine driver in Las Vegas. ?

Plumberg said Thomas told him that she had been in touch with Douglas over the holidays ? but only to give him a gift to pass along to his wife, Brenna Douglas.?

But then came telephone tips in 2004, including one from a Florida man who said a friend, James E. Huden, told him that he had killed a man on Whidbey Island and that he had not been able to find the shell casing, Det. Plumberg wrote in his statement.?That fit with the crime scene, where the shell casing of a .380-caliber pistol was found, according to court documents.

The Florida man added that Huden was having an affair with a woman named Peggy, who lived in Las Vegas, and that the two had been on Whidbey Island over the holidays, court records say.

Meanwhile, a retired police officer in New Mexico turned in a .380-caliber pistol he believed had been used to kill Russel Douglas, according to court records. The retired officer knew Huden and said that he had picked up the gun before leaving for Washington state, and then dropped it off upon his return. The Washington State Patrol crime lab identified the gun as the one that discharged the bullet that killed Russel Douglas. ?

The crime lab also detected "a latent fingerprint" belonging to Peggy Sue Thomas, court records say.

As police interviewed witnesses, Huden departed for Mexico, where he called himself Maestro Jim and taught guitar, the Seattle Weekly reported. While he was abroad, Island County prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder.?

The Seattle Weekly quoted Sgt. Michael Beech as saying on the television program ?Washington?s Most Wanted? that investigators believed that Huden was ?hired, a contract, to kill Russel Douglas.?

In 2011, Huden's wife, Jean Huden, told investigators that her husband told her about the killing. U.S. Marshals arrested Huden in Mexico in June 2011. He was found guilty of first-degree murder in July 2012 in Island County Superior Court and was sentenced to 80 years in prison.

Peggy Sue Thomas was arrested a month later in New Mexico near her houseboat, which court records say she had recently renamed ?Off the Hook.?

Bail was set at $5 million.

Plumberg suggested a possible motive in court records: Thomas and Brenna Douglas had worked together at a hair salon, and Thomas owned the house in which the Douglas family had lived. The detective said one witness had told him that she had heard Russel Douglas had been abusive toward his wife and their children. The Seattle Weekly reported that Brenna Douglas had filed a restraining order against her husband, saying that he had punched her and threatened to kill her.

As for Thomas, her attorney Craig Platt told the Seattle Times Friday that the plea deal provided his client some relief. Thomas has maintained her innocence.

?She accepts the outcome, but for her it?s the lesser of two evils,? Platt said.?

Your beginnings deliver the information your users want.?You structure your?content so it starts with the most important, useful information. And you take the same approach with paragraphs and sentences. You never try to make users read everything. You always put their information needs first.

    C ? Conciseness

You write concisely.?You include all the detail a user might need, but you waste no words in doing so.

    D ? Direct links

Your links take users directly to the named resource.?You never dump users on the home page of another website and expect them to find their own way. You know their time is limited. ?And you take the time needed to maintain these links.

    E ? Egoless

Your content is written to inform, not impress. You always write for your users?not for?yourself or your manager.

    F ? Findable

You write accurate and meaningful titles to help people find and recognise your content in search results, social media links, their browser history, tabs and bookmarks. You provide useful meta descriptions. You use file and folder names that are meaningful. You use the right keywords.

    G ? Gobbledygook

You never use gobbledygook (or ?weasel words?, as Australian writer Don Watson calls it). You don?t try to sound impressive or hide what?s really going on. You?re clear and direct.

    H ? Headings

Your headings break up and label your content. They reveal its structure, using appropriate heading level tags (h1, h2 and so on).

    I ? Images

Your images are usable and accessible. They help users understand your content. You don?t rely on colour to convey meaning, but supplement it with labels, patterns or textures. You choose images with strong colour contrast. You avoid images of text. And you include text alternatives.

    J ? Jargon and idioms

You avoid jargon and non-literal phrases that may make your content more difficult for some. Instead, you use words and phrases your users will understand.

    K ? Keywords

You know the words your users search with. You use them as your topic terms, rather than using internal language.??You don?t overuse them though. You know that keyword density can make your content sound unnatural, and isn?t going to help you get better search rankings. And you?know it?s pointless writing keyword metadata for public search engines.

    L ? Link text

You label your links clearly, so users know where a link will lead them. You never use ?click here?, ?read more?, ?this website? or other uninformative labels for links. You also let users know when a link will open a document.

    M ? Meta descriptions

Your web pages have meta descriptions that accurately summarise or describe their content. The descriptions are concise?not more than 160 characters?and unique.

    N ? Noun strings

You never use noun strings?a series of 3 or more nouns strung together. You rewrite sentences that do.

    O ? Optimised images

You always use images that are optimised for the web. You make sure they?re cropped to show the relevant detail, resized to fit the appropriate space on screen, and saved in the right format.

    P ? Planned

You always plan before you start writing. You identify your target audiences and consider their information needs. You get all the information you need by talking with your colleagues and anyone who might contribute to, review or approve your content.

Q ? Quality standards and guidelines

Your content meets relevant quality standards. You know your editorial and web style guides well. You?re familiar with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

    R ? Readable

Your content is easy to read. You use short, everyday words. You avoid long sentences. You use the active voice and the present tense whenever possible. You avoid noun strings and nominalised verbs. You use personal pronouns.

    S ? Scannable

Your content is easy to scan. You lead with the most important information. Your headings act as signposts, and start with the most informative words. You keep paragraphs short and focused on a single topic. You use dot points where appropriate, keeping each point short. You don?t clutter the page with loads of links. Instead you carefully choose and position the links.

    T ? Text alternatives

Your images use an appropriate text alternative. You know when to use a long text alternative and when to use a blank one. You never repeat a caption as the text alternative, but write something shorter instead.

    U ? Useful

You publish useful content. You don?t publish content because you have it, or because you can?you always identify a need first. And you check to make sure you?re not duplicating content already on your site. You maintain your content and remove pages no longer useful.

    V ? Verbs, not nouns

You use verbs rather than turning them into nouns (nominalisations). You check your drafts to look for common signs of nominalised verbs:

    • Nouns with these endings: -ion, -ing, -al, -ment, -ance or -dom
    • Verbs often used nearby: give, make, undertake, take, achieve, effect, have.

W ? Word and PDF documents

You rarely publish Word or PDF documents online. You only do it when people need to print or redistribute the content. You never do it because because it?s faster or easier for you.

    X ? X-channel (cross channel)

Your content always considers where users have come from to reach it. It doesn?t repeat what they?ve already seen. You liaise with your colleagues who handle communications in print or social media, so users are referred to the right page, the relevant information, the next step.

Y ? You and other personal pronouns

You use ??you? and ?your? when referring to your users. And you?re not afraid of using ?we? and ?our? when referring to your organisation.

    Z ? Zzz (sleep)

You put some distance between writing your draft and reviewing it. ?You always wait at least overnight, and longer when web publishing deadlines allow.

UFC On FOX 6 Results: Rampage Jackson Falls To Glover Teixeira (VIDEO/PHOTOS)

CHICAGO -- In possibly Rampage Jackson's last UFC fight, the former champion was visibly exhausted.

It also was easy to see that Glover Teixeira was well on his way to a unanimous decision Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd at the United Center.

Jackson, the 34-year-old former light heavyweight champion was taken down in all three rounds, but Teixeira (20-2) couldn't finish him. Jackson (32-11) got back to his feet every time. Late in the second round, Jackson tried to shrug off Teixeira's punches, but fatigue appeared to be setting in.

"I really wanted to win that fight," Jackson said. "I kind of wish I fought smart and didn't get hit so much, but I always said I would rather lose a good fight than win a boring one and the fans are telling me that was an exciting fight. So I guess I'm sad but not so sad. I fought like Rampage tonight."

    The fight was scored 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Jackson, who fought his last fight under his current UFC contract, has been critical of the UFC and how he perceives the organization treats its fighters. He insists the fight was his last in the UFC, but plans on continuing his MMA career.

"He just walked out right now and screamed, `You are going to miss me,'" White said. "I said, `I miss you already buddy.' ... Rampage's biggest problem is that he doesn't always train. He doesn't always stay in shape. If he took this sport 100 percent, hardcore, serious, God knows what that guy would be able to accomplish, but he doesn't."

Demetrious Johnson successfully defended his flyweight title in the main event, unanimously outpointing John Dodson.

Dodson, fighting at 125 pounds, landed left hands twice in the second round, sending Johnson to the ground. In the third round, Johnson had a takedown and landed a knee to get back in the fight. Johnson was warned after two illegal knees, a low blow in the first round and an illegal knee in the fourth round.

Johnson (17-2-1) started taking control late in fourth land, landing a series of knees to Dodson's head and a series of punches as Dodson (15-6) tired. It continued in the fifth and final round, as Dodson couldn't defend repeated knees to his head.

Johnson struggled in the first two rounds.

"I got dazed a little bit, but I am in good shape," Johnson said. "It is going to happen. You are going to get hit."

In a lightweight bout, Anthony Pettis (14-2) landed a left kick to Donald Cerrone's body and followed with a left jab in the second round, knocking Cerrone (19-5) to the ground and winning his third straight fight.

"Shutting that guy up was the biggest thing for me," Pettis said. "Now I never need to hear about that guy again. He's done. He got beat in one round. Goodbye."

Pettis put himself in a position for the lightweight UFC title and asked the question to UFC President Dana White.

"I am not scared to fight anybody. I want the champ ASAP," Pettis said. "Dana White what do I have to do for this title fight?"

Pettis came off an 11-month layoff after shoulder surgery.

In another main card fight, 30-year-old Chicago native Ricardo Lamas (13-2) dropped a series of elbows and punches on 24-year-old Erik Koch (13-2) before the featherweight bout was stopped by referee John McCarthy. Lamas had Koch pinned to the ground and went to work on Koch's bloodied face.

North York Neck Pain Alleviated Naturally With Acupuncture Needles

North York acupuncture therapy could be a way of helping a body to rebalance itself. The process involves the manipulation of thin needles that are inserted into specific points in the body. These points correspond to acupuncture points identified through traditional Chinese medicine.

The reason for these specific locations is to help remedy any imbalances in the body. By using these super fine needles the acupuncturist is able to facilitate the way the energy flows through the body. This belief hinges on the the thought that energy can somehow be prevented from flowing freely around the body.

This truly is an ancient process, and its exact development isn?t really known. One explanation is that soldiers in being wounded by sharp pointed instruments in battle, and who went on to recover, found various ailments were better than before. It?s thought the original needles could?ve consisted of bone and stone, before being replaced with metal needles.

There really is not a lot of evidence as to how this method may work. There is probably even less known about why it may work, but some people do find it helpful. The exact points for the needles insertion are decided by the acupuncturist. They carefully question the person beforehand, and may also just observe while others will use a more hands on approach to feel for tender or sore spots.

They are quite likely to take a person?s pulse, and also to look at the tongue. It is something that is frequently based on intuition, philosophy and experience. The needles used tend to be made out of stainless steel and are extremely thin. Most are disposable, although some are reused after being thoroughly sterilized.

Shorter needles are used around the face and neck. Longer needles can be used in other ares. They are so skillfully inserted by North York acupuncture pros that most people will not be aware they are going in.

Last Chance: Get 1 Year of Dreamhost for $100 Off

    Kif Leswing

This is a reminder from the commerce team about the exclusive Dreamhost deal we brought you earlier this week. It expires this Monday. Here's the original info:

Last Chance: Get 1 Year of Dreamhost for $100 OffWeb hosting service Dreamhost is offering users their first year for only $19.40, which is a significant discount off the standard price of $119.40. That brings the per-month price down from $9.95 per month to $1.62.

Lifehacker has recommended Dreamhost numerous times, and it even won our hive five for the most popular web hosting service. It's also a good opportunity to take your data off a free service?that could vanish one day?and take it back into your own hands. Dreamhost offers a bunch of user-friendly features, including one-click Wordpress or Drupal installations that make getting your content management system up fast and easy. This particular plan on sale is a shared plan, but Dreamhost also offers dedicated servers when you decide you need to scale up.

This is the lowest price Dreamhost has offered in the past few years, and it's for Lifehacker readers. This price is good until the end of Friday Monday. They're presumably offering this discount because they want to draw new long-term customers, so the 2nd year isn't as heavily discounted as the first. However, you still save $20 on your second year of hosting, so if you know you want to stick with Dreamhost for the long run, it might make sense to sign up for two years. For everyone else pondering whether to host their own website, this is an opportunity you should take.

This is a special Dealhacker post written by our commerce team. As such, it is not a Lifehacker editorial. We do receive referral fees for each person that signs up for the deal, but it's not an advertisement?it's a deal our commerce team has sought out themselves and negotiated for you, because it's a service we like (and we know you like too).

Learn The Best Ways To Achieve Online Marketing Success ...

If you want a career in online marketing, you can find some suggestions here. In the following paragraphs are some points that you can apply towards success in affiliate endeavors.

There should always be honesty in affiliate marketing. Describe to your users the purpose of your site and reveal all affiliations. If visitors sense dishonesty about your affiliations with the retailer of the product they wish to purchase, they will just pass you up and purchase directly from the merchant.

TIP! You should always disclose to your readers that you earn money if they make a purchase from an affiliate link. Your readers can tell how affiliate links look like and hiding this fact will cause them to lose their trust in you.

Use every appropriate strategy and medium to advertise your product or services. A part of your customer base will prefer searching the web for deals. Some may prefer brochures or fliers. Other customers might respond better to coupons and discounts. If you advertise in several ways, your audience will grow.

Put out feelers with a lot of different affiliates to start out. Using several related sites for you affiliate marketing program offers your customers a wide range of links from which to choose.

TIP! When you are selecting an affiliate company to work with, pick one who supports their affiliates and provides help to sell the product. Affiliate companies are smart, at least most of them are.

If you want to be the most successful affiliate possible, you must keep up with the best marketing methods. It?s tempting to simply grab the first free affiliate marketing campaign that comes along. While free always sounds good, you need to do some research to find options that will be affective in your particular market.

Optimize your marketing success by paying for professional ads. Make sure your ads are directed at specific keywords in order to produce revenue for you. Ads are a great way to draw in new customers and increase awareness of your products.

TIP! If someone visits your sport-themed website, you can be sure that they have one thing on their mind: sports. Only a sports-related link would benefit your affiliate site.

Set goals for yourself that will allow you to improve your current internet marketing strategy. Motivation remains as long as there are unfinished tasks visible in the task bar.

Choosing the hottest products to promote as an affiliate may mean thinner profits. While quality is always a major concern, it does not necessarily translate into popularity. Popularity also means over-saturation and an abundance of competition. This may not result in profits for you.

TIP! Affiliates should use text services to enhance their potential in earning commissions. While this is a little new still, there are lots of affiliates that use this to promote their products, share affiliate offers and keep all of their customers in the know.

    Online Marketing

You should always research any company you plan on affiliating with. It doesn?t matter if the affiliate site has one of the highest earnings in its industry. You must ensure that you will have the ability to easily market it with no problems.

TIP! Affiliate marketing is great for businesses that have a strategy. You needdc to have your blog or site as high in search rankings as possible.

An online marketing program will help you achieve great results when promoting your business on the Internet. Online marketing programs are more effective than other advertising approaches, like banner ads or contextual networks. When looking at affiliate programs, pay attention to things like the directory?s popularity, ease of use and the payment you will receive for referrals.

It takes time to figure out which affiliate ads appeal the most to your audience?s demographic group. Some demographics like big advertisements with sound and video; others will prefer simple text. Your target audience should always be the driving force when you decide which products you wish to sell.

TIP! Increase your Google Plus follower count to keep ahead of your competitors. Intertwine your Google Plus, Twitter, and Facebook marketing, creating a combination of social media networking success.

Create your own e-book and post it on websites where documents can be shared freely. This can show that you know what you are talking about, and it can draw targeted visitors to your website. Make sure your article links back to your website.

You should consider giving your customers the opportunity to also market your product. Offer your customers that chance to be your affiliate upon purchasing your products. You can make a single sale into thousands if you have a client that wants to become an affiliate. It?s an easy way to drive more sales.

TIP! Useful advice for those who have only recently succeeded at affiliate marketing is to avoid resting on their laurels and continue to work hard. You should always strive for bigger and better things.

It is important to select a company with high sales conversion rates in order to have a successful affiliate program. Consider using a one percent conversion ratio as a benchmark.

By watching the statistics of your affiliates, you can see which links are performing well. Test each affiliate link in different locations on the page and compare your results. Be sure to use the same text for this test, and only change the link position within your article.

TIP! Write a note by hand, scan it, then put it up on your site. Handwritten content adds a touch of something that people feel is more personal.

Consider the peripherals when you are establishing affiliate links on the pages of your website. How about a water bottle with a strap so they can bring it out, too?

Every single affiliate you choose should be in your site?s niche. This will increase traffic to your website and also assist you in truly understanding the needs and wants of your customer base.

TIP! One solid piece of advice for potential affiliate marketers is to seek out companies with successful, long-term products. A diverse company gives you many ways to earn money.

Consider entering a niche market to increase your profits through affiliate promotion. It might be harder to find an audience when you are associated with a variety of products rather than focusing on a smaller, specific group of products.

Try to stay up to date in your industry. If you are behind the times in comparison to your competitors, people are more likely to patronize your competitors.

TIP! Try making a website just for your affiliate partners to improve your sales. Other affiliates may agree to work with you if you don?t hide that you use this marketing strategy.

It is critical that you do this, particularly if your target audience is the older generation. Make your font just a little bigger so people will notice it.

You will want to consider what products you are linking to. Once you have your affiliate links arranged properly, you should be earning more profits.

TIP! Use affiliations to market your online business more effectively. Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular ways of advertising, because of the number of people who click links.

Keep your intended audience in mind as you decide which affiliates to join. You should make sure that your affiliates are promoting products and services that are compatible or complementary to what your website offers. Visitors to your site are there because they want shoes, so try to sell them shoes and shoe related products. Choose ads that best cater to your demographic and take advantage of your customer information.

Try choosing an affiliate company who has higher sales conversion ratios. You should aim for about a 1% conversion rate.

TIP! One good marketing technique is to limit the purchase window for an affiliate product. When customers see they may not be able to get their hands on a product later, they might just jump on it.

Many affiliate marketers overdo it. They put their energy in too many places, they choose too many products, and they have too many promotions going at once to stay effectively competitive at any one thing. It is good to note there is no limit when it comes to what can be achieved. You just need time, creative thinking, determination and a willingness to learn in order to be successful in web marketing.

Learn new methods and share tips with other companies by joining a community for online affiliate marketers. You can find multiple outlets online where you can discuss best SEO practices, share codes, give advice, find and give leads on new affiliate programs, and get practical advice from other people doing what you do. Join different groups and forums to further your learning about affiliate marketing.

One highly effective internet marketing tactic is to put deadline stipulations on purchases. If visitors see that there is only a small amount of time left to purchase the product, they might feel an extra push to go ahead and purchase it. People love to feel as though they are getting a deal.

If you require access to your money in a timely fashion, choose an affiliate company that offers more than one payment option. While some companies only pay by check when you reach a predetermined amount, others allow you to send money directly to your bank account or to online payment accounts like AlertPay and Paypal.

    Web Marketing

As previously mentioned, you can better promote your services and products through web marketing. Following these tips leads you on the road to becoming an expert in web marketing.

    Quantum communication: Each photon counts

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Ultrafast, efficient, and reliable single-photon detectors are among the most sought-after components in photonics and quantum communication, which have not yet reached maturity for practical application. Physicist Dr. Wolfram Pernice of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in cooperation with colleagues at Yale University, Boston University, and Moscow State Pedagogical University, achieved the decisive breakthrough by integrating single-photon detectors with nanophotonic chips. The detector combines near-unity detection efficiency with high timing resolution and has a very low error rate.

The results have been published by Nature Communications.

Without reliable detection of single photons, it is impossible to make real use of the latest advances in optical data transmission or quantum computation; it is like having no analog-digital converter in a conventional computer to determine whether the applied voltage stands for 0 or 1. Although a number of different single-photon detector models have been developed over the past few years, thus far, none have provided satisfactory performance.

Several new ideas and advanced developments went into the prototype developed within the "Integrated Quantum Photonics" project at the DFG Center of Functional Nanostructures (CFN). The new single-photon detector, tested in the telecommunications wavelength range, achieves a previously unattained detection efficiency of 91%.

The detector was realized by fabricating superconducting nanowires directly on top of a nanophotonic waveguide. This geometry can be compared to a tube that conducts light, around which a wire in a superconducting state is wound and, as such, has no electric resistivity. The nanometer-sized wire made of niobium nitride absorbs photons that propagate along the waveguide. When a photon is absorbed, superconductivity is lost, which is detected as an electric signal. The longer the tube, the higher is the detection probability. The lengths involved are in the micrometer range.

A special feature of the detector is its direct installation on the chip, which allows for it to be replicated at random. The single-photon detectors built thus far were stand-alone units, which were connected to chips with optical fibers. Arrangements of that type suffer from photons being lost in the fiber connection or being absorbed in other ways. These loss channels do not exist in the detector that is now fully embedded in a silicon photonic circuit. In addition to high detection efficiency, this gives rise to a remarkably low dark count rate. Dark counts arise when a photon is detected erroneously: for instance, because of a spontaneous emission, an alpha particle, or a spurious field. The new design also provides ultrashort timing jitter of 18 picoseconds, which is 18 times 10-12 seconds.

The novel solution also makes it possible to integrate several hundreds of these detectors on a single chip. This is a basic precondition for future use in optical quantum computers.

The detector demonstrated in this study was designed to work at wavelengths in the Telekom bandwidth. The same detector architecture can also be used for wavelengths in the range of visible light. This would allow the principle to be employed in analyses of all structures that emit little light, i.e., photons, such as single molecules or bacteria. ?

Why You've Got To Minimise Comparison To Improve Your Self ...

you're always going to be vulnerable on areas where you already judge you. when you stop, nobody can use it against you because you're not using it against you.

There?s a lot of people that I could compare myself to, but I don?t, or at least I try to keep it to a minimum and I?m very conscious of where it?s likely to happen. It?s my inner critic, the surprising perfectionist in me that can rear its ugly head and put me back on the ?I?m not good enough? path. There?s a multitude of reasons why engaging in the regular self-hacking that is comparison is a must-kick habit. There?s healthy comparison that?s used to positively learn from the insights and grow ? like when you compare your skills not your worth to a peer ? and then there?s the unhealthy comparison that is a hatchet job that leaves you wounded.

When I first started writing Baggage Reclaim back in September 2005, I would look around at other sites and be tweaking and chopping and changing. I very quickly realised that this would defeat the purpose of what I was doing and kill what makes it original in its own right before it had a chance to blossom. I don?t want it to be an identikit version of something else.

Throughout my entire career I?ve seen great people and great things crushed by unhealthy comparison because neither knew how to exist in their own right. They had short-lived periods of contentment but at the back of the person or the company?s mind, was this pervasive urge to keep comparing so they kept making more and more changes and in the end, they were unrecognisable? and not in a good way. We don?t question what we believe based on that comparison and end up going off on an illogical tangent.

Healthy comparison doesn?t detract; it adds and it might even motivate you.

Fact is, there will always be people to compare to who you will deem as ?better? as long as you fundamentally find you unacceptable.

I?m not perfect and try as I might, I?m never going to be. Fact. I could spend the rest of my life attempting to get as close to perfection as possible and no doubt beating myself up for my ?mistakes? or ?failures? while I?m at it, plus I could keep estimating and measuring myself against others in areas where I?m already my harshest critic.

You?re always going to be vulnerable in the areas where you already judge you which means if you want to reduce the vulnerability, stop judging you. Nobody can use it against you when you?re not using it against you.

You?re not perfect and you?re not supposed to be. While you?re busy decimating and censoring who you are to try and replace it with who you ?should? be (you know that annoying voice that keeps piping up and trying to drown out your true identity), you?re throwing the baby out with the bathwater. You?re human and flawed like every other person on the planet so why keep busting your tail about something that really isn?t that special by focusing on your flaws?

Everybody has flaws and you can try and compare and go ?Oh but they have less flaws than I do? but that?s bullshit borne out of you putting them on a pedestal and admiring them while putting you beneath them. Everybody has flaws it?s just that not all of us focus on them, not all of us see them in others (some of us do a mighty fine job of essentially sticking a pump up people?s bottoms and inflating them), and we?re not always in a position to be around someone when character is put to the test ? we don?t know what goes on behind closed doors.

I don?t know why we continue to pedal this myth to ourselves that we?re not good enough and everybody is living the hunkydory lifestyle when we all know of people who have been and done things that surprise us, and it?s not in a good way. And yet we continue to compare.

What makes a person is character. Sadly it?s not what we always look for in others, nor is it always what we appreciate in ourselves.

Let?s be real, some of us believe that superficial stuff like appearance and status is character and along with these, we can be guilty of assuming that wealth, intelligence, and even accomplishments being present in a person are automatic precursors to them having character. That?s why I hear from so many people who have been with beautiful/attractive/highly intelligent/popular? assclowns. If you?ve been in this position, you?ve taken a detour and forgotten that character is what shows how someone will treat you.

What we tend to overvalue in others or ourselves is what we tend to compare ourselves on, while attributing nil or a miniscule value to our character and what really matters. We may have literally no sense of our qualities and characteristics because we?ve spent our entire life comparing, for example, our appearance.

Oddly though, we can admire and even love people for what essentially boils down to superficial stuff that doesn?t rely on character and then feel wounded when we feel that they?ve not valued our character, which doesn?t make sense. How can you ignore code red issues and focus on the stuff that isn?t making a difference to how you?re treated or feel, but then feel bad about you not being valued by them beyond anything superficial?

We compare our appearance, accomplishments and even what we perceive to be our skills to others but these are the moving goalposts of life. We age, accomplishments can decrease in relevance and value, and skills evolve and in some cases, get replaced and automated in our modern world. Some of this stuff can be linked to your character but if it is, and for instance, your skills change, it doesn?t mean that your character has which is all the more reason why we shouldn?t see ourselves as a ?failure? (failed person).

All of these things change and can even be taken away, but what you cannot take away is character and it can and does exist while you?re being human, which means that you?re going to err in this life but it doesn?t mean that you?re not worthy.

It?s a hell of a lot easier to reduce comparison and it?s impact on you (which can literally be tormenting) when you are somebody you respect and you ultimately possess or are working on evolving into the characteristics and values that matter to you in others. When you respect your character and can appreciate you for the small, medium, and large-sized things that you do and are in your life, the changes you?ve made, the adversities you?ve overcome etc., you prioritise character and these aspects in others.

It doesn?t matter what other people are doing with their lives because it?s their lives and you focusing on their lives and hacking at you isn?t going to change the fact that you have your own life to put your stamp on and that you?re a unique person on a journey that you and only you will make. You can keep measuring you against others but it?s illogical and irrelevant, not least because you?re not the same and we each have different thinking and behavioural habits as well as experiences.

Does appearance, status etc open doors? Absolutely, but an open door doesn?t mean contentment beyond the door frame. There are a lot of people who have the things that you want but are unhappy or whose character undermines the very thing that you overvalue while devaluing you.

Why keep diminishing you with comparison? The more you do it, the less there is of you.

Instead of comparing, respect and appreciate what you do have, no matter how small you think that is because it paves the way to growth. There will always be something and someone you can compare to which is all the more reason why you?re on this journey to discover, reclaim, and appreciate you.
