Why outsource a mobile oil truck to service a remote construction site?

Over the last three decades most job sites bought or leased their lubrication equipment because this was both affordable and manageable. Construction companies would therefore have several oil trucks on standby to cater for lubrication supplies as required. Today however, sub-contracting mobile oil trucks to service the lubrication needs of a construction site is the most feasible and economical option.

To begin with, modern construction businesses have to grapple with chaotic supplies logistics, rising operation costs, unavailable and over-priced raw materials, shrinking markets, cutthroat competition, and reduced profit margins. In response to these emerging realities, contemporary business managers are adopting precise strategic measures that'll both reduce operation costs and boost profitability. The current Return on Investment (ROI) ratios are some of the lowest in the history of the construction industry. As such, many previously profitable enterprises are on the blink of liquidation.

It is worth observing that modern construction projects are typically highly complex, massive and large scale. Running a single construction site thus requires huge resources, diverse processes, lots of heavy machinery, swarms of sub-contractors, throngs of manpower, and incredibly complex logistics. If a construction manager can afford to take off some tasks from his to-do list, or to assign some of the stressful details and demands of the day-to-day operations to an able professional, this would significantly contribute towards achieving the high quality and timeliness required of each project.

These observations and considerations can help to explain why most construction contractors now increasingly prefer to outsource lubrication equipment rather than rely on their own lubrication supplies and equipment. It certainly makes perfect business sense to reduce the operation costs of a construction project while also avoiding the stressful demands posed by some aspects of the project. A site manager can therefore easily subcontract mobile oil trucks from a third-party provider to deliver the requisite lubrication supplies to the site, and by so doing avoid using his manpower and resources for this non-core but still vital requirement. This will allow the site manager to concentrate on the core project tasks and thus deliver better outcomes at a lesser cost.

A mobile oil truck that is attachable to a steel trailer can provide a high level of accessibility to a construction site, and which is key to the success of any project that relies on heavy machinery. Such an oil truck can exclusively be used to fetch and maintain adequate lubrication supplies at the site until the project's completion. A high level of convenience is offered by such an arrangement - as compared to having project personnel sourcing for and maintaining lubrication supplies while simultaneously working on the project, and especially when the construction is in a remote area.

An additional advantage with outsourced oil trucks is that if they are hired from a specialist professional service provider they'll often come fully equipped with dispensers, pumps, hoses, open and closed trailers, gauges, and indeed any other part or component required to maintain optimal lubrication supplies. Further, such trucks are customized to serve the specific needs of each construction site, at a cheaper cost, and with a greater level of convenience.

Man's best friend: Common canine virus may lead to new vaccines for deadly human diseases

Man's best friend: Common canine virus may lead to new vaccines for deadly human diseases

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Researchers at the University of Georgia have discovered that a virus commonly found in dogs may serve as the foundation for human vaccine development.

Although harmless in humans, parainfluenza virus 5, or PIV5, is thought to contribute to upper respiratory infections in dogs, and it is a common target for canine vaccines designed to prevent kennel cough. In a paper published recently in PLOS ONE, researchers describe how this virus could be used in humans to protect against diseases that have eluded vaccine efforts for decades.

"We can use this virus as a vector for all kinds of pathogens that are difficult to vaccinate against," said Biao He, the study's principal investigator and professor of infectious diseases in UGA's College of Veterinary Medicine. "We have developed a very strong H5N1 flu vaccine with this technique, but we are also working on vaccines for HIV, tuberculosis and malaria."

PIV5 does not cause disease in humans, as our immune system is able to recognize and destroy it. By placing antigens from other viruses or parasites inside PIV5, it effectively becomes a delivery vehicle that exposes the human immune system to important pathogens and allows it to create the antibodies that will protect against future infection.

This approach not only ensures full exposure to the vaccine but also is much safer because it does not require the use of attenuated, or weakened, pathogens. For example, an HIV vaccine delivered by PIV5 would contain only those parts of the HIV virus necessary to create immunity, making it impossible to contract the disease from the vaccine.

"Safety is always our number one concern," said He, who is also a Georgia Research Alliance distinguished investigator and member of the Faculty of Infectious Diseases. "PIV5 makes it much easier to vaccinate without having to use live pathogens."

Using viruses as a delivery mechanism for vaccines is not a new technique, but previous efforts have been fraught with difficulty. If humans or animals already possess a strong immunity to the virus used for delivery, the vaccine is unlikely to work, as it will be destroyed by the immune system too quickly.

"Pre-existing immunity to viruses is the main reason most of these vaccines fail," He said.

But in this latest study, He and his colleagues demonstrate that immunity to PIV5 does not limit its effectiveness as a vaccine delivery mechanism, even though many animals?including humans? already carry antibodies against it.

In their experiments, the researchers found that a single dose inoculation using PIV5 protected mice from the influenza strain that causes seasonal flu. Another single dose experimental vaccine also protected mice from the highly pathogenic and deadly H5N1 virus commonly known as bird flu.

This recent work is a culmination of more than fifteen years of research and experimentation with the PIV5 virus, and He has confidence that it will serve as an excellent foundation for vaccines to treat diseases in both animals and humans.

"I believe we have the best H5N1 vaccine candidate in existence," He said. "But we have also opened up a big field for a host of new vaccines."

(AP) ? The Palestinians are certain to win U.N. recognition as a state Thursday but success could exact a high price: Israel and the United States warn it could delay hopes of achieving an independent Palestinian state through peace talks with Israel.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, mounted an aggressive campaign to head off the General Assembly vote. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defiantly declared Thursday that the Palestinians would have to back down from long-held positions if they ever hope to gain independence.

Ahead of Thursday's vote, thousands of Palestinians from rival factions celebrated in the streets of the West Bank. Although the initiative will not immediately bring about independence, the Palestinians view it as a historic step in their quest for global recognition.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, mounted an aggressive campaign to head off the General Assembly vote.

In a last-ditch move Wednesday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns made a personal appeal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas promising that President Barack Obama would re-engage as a mediator in 2013 if Abbas abandoned the effort to seek statehood. The Palestinian leader refused, said Abbas aide Saeb Erekat.

With most of the 193 General Assembly member states sympathetic to the Palestinians, the vote is certain to succeed. Several key countries, including France, have recently announced they would support the move to elevate the Palestinians from the status of U.N. observer to nonmember observer state. However, a country's vote in favor of the status change does not automatically imply its individual recognition of a Palestine state, something that must be done bilaterally.

The Palestinians say they need U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, the lands Israel captured in 1967, to be able to resume negotiations with Israel. They say global recognition of the 1967 lines as the borders of Palestine is meant to salvage a peace deal, not sabotage it, as Israel claims.

The non-member observer state status could also open the way for possible war crimes charges against the Jewish state at the International Criminal Court.

Netanyahu warned the Palestinians Thursday that they would not win their hoped-for state until they recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland, declare an end to their conflict with the Jewish state and agree to security arrangements that protect Israel.

"The resolution in the U.N. today won't change anything on the ground," Netanyahu declared. "It won't advance the establishment of a Palestinian state, but rather, put it further off."

While Israel argues that Abbas is trying to dictate the outcome of border talks by going to the U.N., the recognition request presented to the world body in fact calls for a quick resumption of negotiations on all core issues of the conflict, including borders.

Netanyahu's predecessors accepted the 1967 lines as a basis for border talks. Netanyahu has rejected the idea, while pressing ahead with Jewish settlement building on war-won land, giving Abbas little incentive to negotiate.

For Abbas, the U.N. bid is crucial if he wants to maintain his leadership and relevance, especially following the recent conflict between his Hamas rivals in Gaza and Israel. The conflict saw the Islamic militant group claim victory and raise its standing in the Arab world, while Abbas' Fatah movement was sidelined and marginalized.

In a departure from previous opposition, the Hamas militant group, which rules the Gaza Strip, said it wouldn't interfere with the U.N. bid, and its supporters joined some of the celebrations Thursday.

In the West Bank city of Hebron, some in a crowd of several thousand raised green Hamas flags, while in the city of Ramallah, senior figures of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two militant groups normally opposed to Abbas, addressed the crowd.

"It's the right step in the right direction," Nasser al-Shaer, a former deputy prime minister from Hamas, said of the U.N. bid.

The Palestinians chose the "International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People" for the vote. Before it takes place, there will be a morning of speeches by supporters focusing on the rights of the Palestinians. Abbas is scheduled to speak at that meeting, and again in the afternoon when he will present the case for Palestinian statehood in the General Assembly.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Wednesday that the U.N. vote will not fulfill the goal of independent Palestinian and Israeli states living side by side in peace, which the U.S. strongly supports because that requires direct negotiations.

"We need an environment conducive to that," she told reporters in Washington. "And we've urged both parties to refrain from actions that might in any way make a return to meaningful negotiations that focus on getting to a resolution more difficult."

The U.S. Congress has threatened financial sanctions if the Palestinians improve their status at the United Nations.

Ahead of the vote, Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch filed an amendment to a defense bill Wednesday that would eliminate funding for the United Nations if the General Assembly changes Palestine's status.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said that by going to the U.N., the Palestinians violate "both the spirit and the word of signed agreements to solve issues through negotiations," which broke down four years ago.

But Israeli officials appeared to back away from threats of drastic measures if the Palestinians get U.N. approval, with officials suggesting the government would take steps only if the Palestinians use their new status to act against Israel.

Regev, meanwhile, affirmed that Israel is willing to resume talks without preconditions.

U.N. diplomats said they will be listening closely to Abbas' speech to the General Assembly on Thursday afternoon before the vote to see if he makes an offer of fresh negotiations with no strings, which could lead to new talks. The Palestinians have been demanding a freeze on Israeli settlements as a precondition.

As a sign of the importance Israel attaches to the vote, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman flew to New York and was scheduled to meet Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon before the vote.

Unlike the Security Council, there are no vetoes in the General Assembly and the resolution to raise the Palestinian status from an observer to a nonmember observer state only requires a majority vote for approval. To date, 132 countries ? over two-thirds of the U.N. member states ? have recognized the state of Palestine.

The Palestinians have been courting Western nations, especially the Europeans, seen as critical to enhancing their international standing. A number have announced they will vote "yes" including France, Italy, Spain, Norway, Denmark and Switzerland. Those opposed or abstaining include the U.S., Israel, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia.

The Palestinians turned to the General Assembly after the United States announced it would veto their bid last fall for full U.N. membership until there is a peace deal with Israel.

Following last year's move by the Palestinians to join the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO, the U.S. withheld funds from the organization, which amount to 22 percent of its budget. The U.S. also withheld money from the Palestinians.

Shrubs lend insight into a glacier's past

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? The stems of shrubs have given researchers a window into a glacier's past, potentially allowing them to more accurately assess how they're set to change in the future.

Their findings have been published 27 November in IOP Publishing's journal Environmental Research Letters, and show how a glacier's history of melting can be extended way past the instrumental record.

Much like the rings on a tree stump indicate how old it is, measuring the width of rings on the stem of a shrub can give a good indication of how well it has grown year on year. Under extreme environmental conditions, such as those close to a glacier, a shrub's growth relies heavily on summer temperatures, meaning the ring-width of a shrub can be used a proxy for glacial melting, which also relies heavily on summer temperatures.

Lead author of the study, Allan Buras, said: "In warm summers, shrubs grow more compared to cold summers. In contrast, a glacier's summer mass balance is more negative in warm summers, meaning there is more melting compared to cold summers.

"Big rings in shrubs therefore indicate comparably warm summers, and thus a strongly negative summer mass balance -- in other words, more melting."

The researchers, from the University of Greifswald, tested this theory on a local icecap in the Scandic Mountains of southern Norway. They took 24 samples of shrubs from a site close to the glacier and analysed their ring-widths.

Monthly precipitation and temperature data from a local climate station were retrieved from the Norwegian Meteorological Office, and the summer mass balance of the glacier, from 1963 to 2010, was retrieved from the existing literature.

Each of these data sets was then statistically tested to see if there was a correlation between them. The results showed a robust and reliable correlation between the ring-width of shrubs and the summer melting of the glacier.

"Our results show that it is possible to reconstruct glacier summer mass balance with shrub ring-width series and it is therefore theoretically possible to extent records of summer mass balance into the past," Buras continued.

The shrubs that were collected in the study were relatively young, only allowing for reliable reconstructions over the past 36 years, meaning they could not be used to extend the record of the glacier; however, the researchers are confident that this could have been achieved if longer-lived shrubs were selected.

Most of the available data on the mass balance of glaciers only spans several decades and there is some data missing, mainly because most glaciers are situated in hard-to-reach arctic and alpine areas.

With the possibility to extend the instrumental records of summer mass balance, researchers may gain a better understanding of how glaciers behave in the summer, which they can use to calibrate and verify their existing models.

Malbec, Meat and More ? Food Pairing with Argentina's Flagship Wine

?

?

The appetite-whetting sight and scent of an alfresco Argentine asado is enough to bring out the inner caveman in even the most sophisticated of metropolitan food lover. And nowhere is this more apparent than after a hard day?s wine tasting, out among the vines of Mendoza, as the first sizzle of meat hitting the grill sends a plume of smoky welcome into the crisp Andean air. It?s the prelude to the near perfect Malbec moment, when this bold, aromatic and savoury variety comes into its own as a sensational partner to red-blooded meat cooked gaucho-style over a slumbering fire.

Of course, Argentine Malbec and meat ? with emphasis on beefy steaks and grills ? is a story well told. So much so that Malbec?s fondness for a broader swathe of dishes is often overlooked. Meat, admittedly, remains its favourite sparring partner. But with a surprisingly varied flavour spectrum, ranging from juicy, red-fruit leaning wines to intense, tannic, darker specimens, the variety can take all manner of robust flavours and textures in its stride.

At the easier-going end of this spectrum, Argentina?s Malbecs sit comfortably with favourites such as pizza and rich pasta dishes ? including Bolognese, but also with earthier aubergine or mushroom-laden concoctions. It?s also a pretty reliable bet with the comforting simplicity of proper butchers? bangers and mustardy mash or blood-rich black pudding and Puy lentils.

Ramp up the quality a little, and the more savoury, even spicy edge to the variety starts calling for some pretty serious foods. Given the noble origins of Malbec in the vineyards of Bordeaux, this perhaps comes as little surprise. Moreover, it?s something that sommeliers are increasingly open to explore.

?Malbec is like pizza or sex ? even when its not the best it?s still enjoyable,? says Alessandro Marchesan, head sommelier at Zuma and Roka restaurants in London. ?But when Malbec is good, the aromatic, slightly herbal notes in the wine can work very well as a counterpoint to herby or even spicy notes in a dish.?

Marchesan?s most memorable Malbec match came with a salt and mustard-tinged ham hock dish, also taking fruity apple sauce in its stride. He also suggests Malbec as a versatile partner for a number of vibrant Spanish dishes, again including pork-based recipes where the sweet, juicy white meat is met with Mediterranean herbs, along with French charcuterie, where higher altitude wines, with higher acidity, act as a foil to the fatty richness in the food.

For Viraj Sawant, sommelier at La Trompette, it?s the higher altitude, more poised styles that offer the most possibilities with finer food.

?If you are looking at the more elegantly structured, higher acidity Malbecs, then these are good at cutting through rich, fattier foods, such as duck, game birds or even goose,? says Sawant. ?I would even pair some Malbec with a very oily, herby fish dish, such as sardines.?

Luigi Buonanno, wine buyer and head sommelier at the Etrusca Group of restaurants, says it all comes down the style of Malbec. He suggests elegant Patagonian Malbec with herby Proven?al lamb (or a British Sunday roast complete with mint sauce), while favouring the bigger structured, richer wines of Mendoza with game or venison (so long as the game is not too gamey), and says hard cheese is also a good partner.

?Malbec, with its highish alcohol and rich body, is an ideal weight as a wine to round off a meal, and it also works well with hard cheeses such as mature cheddar or pecorino, so this can be another good time to bring it to the table.?

It?s not just British and Mediterranean cuisines, either, that can work with Argentina?s flagship grape variety. At the Cinnamon Club, a fine London eatery dedicated to modern Indian cuisine and good wine, executive chef Vivek Singh, working closely with his sommeliers, is currently recommending Argentine Malbec with his saddle of Cumbrian deer, which comes complete with a pickled spice kedgeree, on the menu.

?We find that Malbec is quite versatile and seems to work well with pickle and spice flavours such as fennel and cumin, along with the sweetness of the meat and smoky flavours from the tandoor,? says Singh. ?It?s a wine that can cope with all these elements in a dish.?

As if all the above was not enough, perhaps a final word should go to another pairing possibility that the richer, softer styles of Malbec can take in their stride. It is, of course, chocolate, a normally tricky customer for wine, but one that (especially when dark and high quality) can work rather well with this very versatile champion of Argentine wine.

Malbec, then, offers so much more versatility than perhaps first meets the eye. And this in addition to being a world-beating partner for all things asado?

Please tell us what other foods and cuisines you like to pair with Malbec in the comments below.

Bloomberg to ask Congress for $9.8 billion for Sandy costs

(Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Monday he will ask Congress for $9.8 billion to pay for superstorm Sandy costs not covered by insurance or other federal funds.

In a letter to New York's congressional delegation, Bloomberg said public, private and indirect losses to the city from the devastating late-October storm totaled an estimated $19 billion.

Of that, private insurance is expected to cover $3.8 billion, with Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursements to cover at least an additional $5.4 billion, Bloomberg said in a statement.

The city still will need the additional $9.8 billion to help pay for costs that FEMA does not cover, like hazard mitigation, long-term housing, shoreline restoration and protection efforts, he said.

Bloomberg is scheduled to speak with congressional leaders in Washington on Wednesday.

Sandy made landfall in New Jersey on October 29. It blasted through the Northeastern U.S., killing dozens of people, devastating homes, forcing evacuations, crippling power systems and shutting down New York City's subway system for days.

The total cost in the region still is not clear as estimates of the damage, as well as future repair and prevention costs, continue coming in from states, cities and counties.

Private insurance is expected to cover a large chunk of the costs, while FEMA is expected to cover at least 75 percent of eligible costs, but city and state officials can ask for more.

On November 12, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he planned to ask the federal government for $30 billion in disaster aid for the state.

Cuomo's initial estimates pegged the total amount of damages for the region at $50 billion, with about $33 billion of that incurred in New York state.

Cuomo's office did not immediately reply to a request for information about how New York City's damages fit into the overall estimated damages for the state.

The city had about $4.8 billion of uninsured private losses, $3.8 billion of insured private losses, and $4.5 billion in losses to city agencies.

Reconstructing the city's damaged roads alone could cost nearly $800 million, Bloomberg said. New York City, a financial and tourism center, also lost about $5.7 billion in gross city product, he said.

Neighboring New Jersey, which saw massive damage to its transit system and coastline, said it suffered at least $29.4 billion in overall losses, according to preliminary estimates released by Governor Chris Christie on Friday.

As the NFL heads into December, nearly every division race has an outright favorite. Some ? Denver, Atlanta, New England, Houston and Baltimore ? are on the verge of clinching playoff spots.

The Broncos, Falcons, Ravens, Texans and Patriots took big steps toward making the postseason with victories this week. Denver in the AFC West and Atlanta in the NFC South both have four-game leads after tight road wins Sunday, while Baltimore went to overtime to secure a three-game margin in the AFC North.

Houston and New England did their work on Thanksgiving Day to grab three-game cushions in the AFC South and East, respectively. San Francisco's victory and a loss by Seattle pushed the 49ers' edge to 2? games in the NFC West. The New York Giants are up two games in the NFC East and dropped Green Bay to one game behind Chicago in the NFC North. Bears-Packers is the only truly close chase through 11 games.

Denver (8-3) had it much tougher than expected at Kansas City (1-10), but rallied for its sixth straight win as Peyton Manning threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns.

"It's a division opponent; you have to win," Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said. "You have got to win those games. It is what is going to prepare you for the playoffs."

Manning hit tight end Jacob Tamme late in the first half and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas in the third quarter for scores, and that was more than enough to overcome three field goals by the Chiefs' Ryan Succop as Kansas City lost its eighth straight. Knowshon Moreno added 85 yards rushing in place of Willis McGahee, who went on injured reserve this week with a knee injury.

Jamaal Charles ran for 107 yards for the Chiefs.

The victory, combined with San Diego's 16-13 home loss to Baltimore, put the Broncos in position to win the division next week.

"We have to keep going," Thomas said. "Our goal is to keep winning and get to the big game."

Atlanta (10-1) edged Tampa Bay 24-23 as Matt Ryan threw for 353 yards and overcame two big turnovers by leading another late touchdown drive. Ryan teamed with Julio Jones on an 80-yard TD in the third quarter, but needed Michael Turner's 1-yard TD run with 7:55 left to win.

Connor Barth missed a 56-yard goal for Tampa Bay (6-5) in the closing minutes, and the Bucs' four-game winning streak ended.

"Ten-and-1 is great, but I'll tell you what I've said since the beginning of the season: We're just jockeying for position," tight end Tony Gonzalez said. "We just want to put ourselves in the best position, playing the best football. Right around this time is when you want to start jelling as a team and take it on into the playoffs because that's the most important thing."

Elsewhere Sunday, it was San Francisco 31, New Orleans 21; the Giants 38, Green Bay 10; Chicago 28, Minnesota 10; Indianapolis 20, Buffalo 13; Cincinnati 34, Oakland 10; Cleveland 20, Pittsburgh 14; Miami 24, Seattle 21; St. Louis 31, Arizona 17; and Jacksonville 24, Tennessee 19.

On Thursday, Houston won at Detroit 34-31 in overtime; New England routed the New York Jets 49-19; and Washington beat Dallas 38-31.

Monday night, it is Carolina (2-8) at Philadelphia (3-7).

RAVENS 16, CHARGERS 13 OT

At San Diego, the Ravens pulled off a fourth-and-29 conversion to stay alive, then Justin Tucker kicked a 38-yard field with 1:07 left in overtime to complete a stunning comeback.

San Diego (4-7) led 13-3 on Nick Novak's 30-yard field goal and seemed headed for its first win against a team with a winning record this season. But Ray Rice caught a short pass from Joe Flacco and weaved through the defense to the San Diego 33 with 1:37 to play. After a review, the ball was moved back to the 34 and the refs measured. The new spot gave the Ravens a first down by the length of the ball.

Six plays later, Tucker kicked a 38-yard field goal to tie the game as regulation expired.

The Ravens (9-2) won their fourth straight and for the eighth time in nine games.

49ERS 31, SAINTS 21

At New Orleans, the San Francisco defense stymied Drew Brees and ended the Saints' three-game winning streak. Ahmad Brooks and Donte Whitner each returned interceptions for touchdowns and the 49ers (8-2-1) sacked Brees five times.

Colin Kaepernick ran for one score that he made look easy and threw for a touchdown in another performance that validated coach Jim Harbaugh's decision to start him ahead of Alex Smith.

Brees finished with 267 yards and three TDs for New Orleans (5-6).

GIANTS 38, PACKERS 10

At East Rutherford, N.J., Eli Manning threw for three touchdowns, giving him 200 for his career, a team record, and New York sacked Aaron Rodgers five times.

Coming off their bye, the Giants (7-4) put to rest concerns about a dormant offense and a tired arm for Manning. He connected with rookie Rueben Randle, Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks for scores, and Ahmad Bradshaw had a combined 119 yards, including a 59-yard sprint on a screen pass to begin the onslaught.

Mathias Kiwanuka had two of the sacks as Rodgers never got comfortable. Green Bay (7-4) had its five-game winning streak snapped.

FALCONS 24, BUCCANEERS 23

At Tampa, Fla., Matt Ryan threw for 353 yards and overcame two big turnovers by leading another late touchdown drive to end Tampa Bay's four-game winning streak.

Michael Turner's 1-yard TD run put Atlanta ahead for good with 7:55 left. Connor Barth missed a 56-yard goal for Tampa Bay (6-5) in the closing minutes, and Josh Freeman's desperation pass fell incomplete in the end zone with no time remaining.

The win enabled the Falcons (10-1) to keep pace with Houston for the NFL's best record.

BEARS 28, VIKINGS 10

At Chicago, Jay Cutler threw for 188 yards and a touchdown after missing a game because of a concussion as Chicago (8-3) ended a two-game losing streak.

The Bears grabbed a 25-3 halftime lead thanks to Cutler's pinpoint passing. The defense held Adrian Peterson in check early on, although he finished with 108 yards rushing for Minnesota (6-5).

The win could prove costly. The Bears lost wide receiver Devin Hester (concussion), running back Matt Forte (ankle), cornerback Charles Tillman (ankle) and both starting guards to injuries.

BRONCOS 17, CHIEFS 9

At Kansas City, Mo., Peyton Manning threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns, and Denver (8-3) rallied for its sixth straight win.

Manning hit tight end Jacob Tamme late in the first half and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas in the third quarter, and that was more than enough to overcome three field goals by the Chiefs' Ryan Succop as Kansas City lost its eighth straight game.

Jamaal Charles ran for 107 yards for the Chiefs (1-10), who haven't scored a touchdown since the first quarter against Pittsburgh on Nov. 12, a span of more than 11 quarters and 173 minutes of game time.

COLTS 20, BILLS 13

At Indianapolis, T.Y. Hilton scored on a 75-yard punt return and caught an 8-yard TD pass from Andrew Luck. He is the first player in franchise history to score by punt return and pass reception in the same game.

Luck was 20 of 37 for 240 yards with a TD and an interception as Indy improved to 7-4.

Buffalo (4-7) ended its red-zone drought with 11:30 left with a 1-yard TD pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Lee Smith. But the Bills moved closer to extending their string of non-playoff seasons to 13.

BENGALS 34, RAIDERS 10

At Cincinnati, Andy Dalton threw three touchdown passes in outdueling Cincinnati's former quarterback, Carson Palmer. BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran for 129 yards and a touchdown against the NFL's most generous defense. He had runs of 48 and 39 yards ? the longest of his career ? to set up scores for the Bengals (6-5).

Palmer had a tough time all-around in his return to Cincinnati, going 19 of 34 for 146 yards with four sacks and an interception.

Oakland (3-8) lost its fourth in a row.

A brawl in the fourth quarter resulted in Oakland's Tommy Kelly and Lamarr Houston and Cincinnati's Andrew Whitworth getting ejected.

BROWNS 20, STEELERS 14

At Cleveland, the Steelers (6-5) committed eight turnovers and third-string quarterback Charlie Batch struggled as the Browns (3-8) beat Pittsburgh for just the second time in 18 games.

Chris Rainey's fumble with 2:25 left was recovered by Cleveland's Phil Taylor to clinch it.

Batch, starting for Pittsburgh because of injuries to Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich, was picked off three times and the Steelers lost five fumbles, the last on the final play of the game.

Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden sustained a concussion in the final minutes when he banged his head while falling awkwardly after an incompletion. Backup Colt McCoy, who suffered a concussion when the teams met late last season, came in and finished off the win without attempting a pass.

DOLPHINS 24, SEAHAWKS 21

At Miami, Dan Carpenter kicked a 43-yard field goal on the final play, capping a rally by Miami (5-6), which scored 17 points in the last 8:08.

Rookie Ryan Tannehill drove Miami 65 yards in the final 92 seconds to set up the winning kick. He finished 18 for 26 for 253 yards and a score.

Leon Washington returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the eighth time to tie the NFL career record and put Seattle ahead with eight minutes left. Miami answered with an 80-yard drive capped by Tannehill's 29-yard scoring pass to Charles Clay, making it 21-21.

The Seahawks (6-5), who are unbeaten at home this year, lost for the fifth time in six road games.

RAMS 31, CARDINALS 17

At Glendale, Ariz., Janoris Jenkins became the first player in Rams history and the first NFL rookie since 1960 to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game and St. Louis (4-6-1) handed the Cardinals (4-7) their seventh loss in a row.

Jenkins' returns of 36 and 39 yards emphatically ended the Rams' streak of five straight games without an opponent turnover. Arizona rookie Ryan Lindley was intercepted four times in his first NFL start.

Sam Bradford had a pair of 37-yard touchdown passes to Lance Kendricks and Chris Givens as the Rams snapped a five-game winless streak. Steven Jackson rushed for 139 yards in 24 carries.

JAGUARS 24, TITANS 19

At Jacksonville, Chad Henne threw two touchdown passes, sparking the NFL's worst offense for the second consecutive week.

The Jaguars (2-9) snapped a seven-game losing streak and were competitive at home for the first time this season.

Henne, making his first start in more than 13 months, found Cecil Shorts III on a 59-yard touchdown play in the third quarter and hooked up with rookie Justin Blackmon for a 7-yard score in the fourth.

The Titans (4-7) cut the lead to 21-19 on Jake Locker's 6-yard pass to Kenny Britt with 4:52 remaining and had the ball with a chance to take the lead. But Russell Allen tipped Locker's pass over the middle, and Dwight Lowery ? back on the field after a five-week absence ? had his first interception of the season.

Google may be manipulating your online shopping search | Digital ...

Google Shopping search results manipulation

As Google continues to transform itself into an entity building all things for the Internet, concerns and criticisms about its shopping platform are building. Is the platform putting small business and buyers at a disadvantage by giving better placement to businesses lining its pockets?

Way back in 1998 when Google launched, its core product was search and its main customer was the user. Throughout its early years, the company was laser focused on making the best search engine and refining the content it surfaced PageRank. Google wanted to perfect search so that users could find the best results based on an unbiased algorithm.

Almost 15 years later, Google has morphed into a search engine, advertising platform, software developer, hardware developer, game and app developer, mobile operating system developer, Web browser, video host, blog platform, social network, and most recently, an e-commerce site with its release of the pay-to-play service Google Shopping (formerly known as Product Search).

All this, despite the fact that Google?s core philosophy ? explained in a post titled 10 Things We Know to be True ? pointedly says: ?It?s best to do one thing really, really well.? Oh how the times have changed.

?You can make money without doing evil.?

But that?s not the only core principle that one-time lovers of the search giant have begun to question. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) that have recently lost significant amounts of traffic from Google are worried that the search giant no longer lives by its founding principle: ?You can make money without doing evil.? With display ads ? expected to generate $2.31 billion in net revenues this year for the search giant ? increasingly seen as an outdated form of advertising, and the CPC of Google ads decreasing by 15 percent, Google is exploring new sources of revenue generation.

Critics of Google have started questioning whether the company has begun quietly exploring a system of pay-to-play for placement in its search results, an accusation that Google firmly denies. But some are loudly questioning whether a company in control of 65.3 percent of search ? processing more than one billion search queries a day ? can be completely unbiased when creating a search algorithm in which its own products, and the products of its advertisers, are competing for rankings. Unfortunately for Google, those critics include the Federal Trade Commission.

Is the search giant stifling free competition?

ftc google investigationRecently, the FTC launched an investigation to determine whether or not the search giant is engaging in anti-trust behavior and limiting free competition by manipulating search results to give favorable placement to its own products (like listings from Google Shopping or Google Places) and to companies that can afford to pay in the form of advertising. Similar charges were launched against Google in January when it rolled out Search Plus Your World, which incorporated Google+ content into its search results. Critics argued that the search giant was playing favorites with its own social media site at the expense of competitors like Facebook and Twitter. Both of which, it should be noted, are much larger, more robust networks with arguably more valuable social content.

FTC investigators are also looking into whether or not Google AdWords, the search engine?s advertising marketplace, discriminates against companies advertising on sites that Google considers competitors ? like comparison shopping sites and consumer review sites.

Google vs. the small business owner ? and thus, you

Whether intentional or not, many small businesses have recently seen dramatic drops in traffic that previously flowed through Google. The comparison shopping site NexTag saw a 50 percent drop in traffic from Google in recent months; the number is especially significant when considering that 60 percent of NexTag?s traffic comes from Google in the form of search and paid ads. NexTag?s response was to double the amount it spent on Google ads.

In a recent OpEd in the Wall Street Journal, CEO of Nextag Jeffrey Katz wrote, ?[Google] has used its position to bend the rules to help maintain its online supremacy, including the use of sophisticated algorithms weighted in favor of its own products and services at the expense of search results that are truly most relevant.

?It?s easy to see when Google makes changes to its algorithms that effectively punish its competitors, including us. Our data ? shows without a doubt that Google has stacked the deck. And as a result, it has shifted from a true search site into a commerce site ? a commerce site whose search algorithm favors products and services from Google and those from companies able to spend the most on advertising,? Katz said, adding, ?Google?s latest changes are clearly no longer about helping users.?

While NexTag was able to increase the budget it allocated to Google ads, other small businesses that also get the majority of their traffic from Google can?t afford to follow suit. Tim Carter, who runs AskTheBuilder.com, said in less than two years, daily traffic to his site dropped 87 percent ? from 60,000 to 8,000.

?Google has decided, in their quest for higher profits, to put lower quality content on page one of their results. Much of the content now being served up on page one of Google results is either content created by advertising partners who are just interested in selling more of their products, or it?s content mashed up by work-at-home non-professionals who are feeding the gapping maws of the content farms,? Carter said.

On a Google search results page, the average click-through rate (CTR) for the first, second and third positions are 36.4 percent, 12.5 percent, and 9.5 percent respectively. That means the top three listings attract more than half of all click-throughs in a given search result. Companies whose listings don?t even make the first page better be destination sites, or have a strong flow of referrals from prominent sites, because they won?t likely get any substantial traffic from Google. And while this hurts businesses, the larger implication is that it hurts consumers.

?Google has drastically hurt my business, but it?s not about me,? Carter said. ?It?s about the collateral damage being felt by tens of millions of consumers. These consumers are being deprived of great independent content written by experts with hands-on experience. This information is needed by consumers in this tough economy to make informed purchasing decisions,? Carter said.

?In my opinion, Google is absolutely engaging in anti-competitive behavior. I?m convinced they?re making side deals with the major content farms ? If you want to know why Google changes their algorithm, just follow the money trail. It?s all about money.?

Buyer options get narrower

If the claims that Google is adjusting its search results to favor their own products and the products that advertise with it bear any truth, small businesses who can?t afford to increase their Google advertising budgets aren?t the only ones who stand to lose; millions of consumers who turn to Google each day for unbiased answers and find products will be affected too.

Companies that can afford pay-to-play aren?t always the ones with the best content; but if Google is guilty of what companies like NexTag and AskTheBuilder, among many others, allege, consumers searching online are exponentially more likely to end up clicking on promoted links and easily missing better results.

The biggest issue for consumers is that many of them don?t know that the search results are being tampered with. Craig Wildfang, an attorney with Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi who previously worked at the U.S. Justice Department, told CNET, ?Part of the problem is that consumers may not know that their results are being manipulated in a particular way.?

Katz expressed similar concerns in his OpEd, writing: ?Most people believe that when they type ?convection microwave oven? or ?biking shorts? into Google, they will receive a list of the most relevant sites. Not true. That?s how Google used to work. Now, when someone searches for these items, the most prominent results are displayed because companies paid Google for that privilege.?

Again, it?s important to note that despite the mounting criticism and evidence, Google has denied these allegations. In response to Katz?s claim, Amit Singhal, Senior Vice President, Engineering at Google wrote in a blog post, ?Let me be very clear: our unpaid, natural search results are never influenced by payment. Our algorithms rank results based only on what the most relevant answers are for users?which might be a direct answer or a competitor?s website. Our ads and commercial experiences are clearly labeled and distinct from the unpaid results, and we recently announced new improvements to labeling of shopping results. This is in contrast to most comparison shopping sites, which receive payment from merchants but often don?t clearly?label search results as being influenced by payment.? Still, you can see in the screenshot below Google explains part of its shopping results are based on compensation from merchants.?

Don?t like it? Well, you can leave

While Google denies manipulating its search results, supporters note that competitors like Bing, Blekko, and DuckDuckGo are just a click away. Google supporters also argue that whether or not the search engine is biasing its results, it?s their right to do so.

Kevin O?Connor, founder of DoubleClick and FindTheBest, a data-driven comparison engine, said regardless of whether it?s right or wrong, Google has the right to alter its search results as it sees fit, just as users have the right to search on other platforms if they don?t agree with what the search giant is doing.

?Google is doing what most of us would do if we ran the company?pursue growth opportunities.? Google does bias their search results but they have that right given it?s their product.? However, consumers can vote with their fingers and if Google gives poor search results, they will lose customers.? There were many search engines before Google?Lycos, Excite, AltaVista?who once dominated the market but disappeared when they expanded beyond core search,? O?Connor said.

Slickdeals CEO Bryant Quan agrees. ?I believe Google should be free to build whatever tools and services however they see fit, so long as they aren?t purposely suppressing competitors in organic search results.?

Really, the problem is being put solidly in consumers? hands: Google is free to do what it wants, regardless of ethics or whether it works in our best interest ? it is, at the end of the day, a company. But clearly, there are strong suggestions your Google shopping searches are being influenced by factors not in your control. What you do with this knowledge is up to you. The options? Turning to other search engines, or opting for shopping-specific ones like Shopzilla, TheFind, or PriceGrabber. Or of course, you can continue to use Google Search or Google Shopping ? just be sure to bring a discerning eye with you and try digging beyond the first few page results. You never know what you?ll find down there.?
