Mount Pleasant Police Department Chief Harry Sewell will be retiring at the end of 2012, town officials announced Monday.
Mt. Pleasant Town Administrator Eric DeMoura stated in a release Chief Sewell's retirement would go into effect on Dec. 31.
Sewell has been with the department for 22 years, and according to DeMoura, "had an extraordinary impact on [the] community."
DeMoura stated, "Despite the challenges associated with our immense growth and the nation's economic downturn, Harry positioned the Mount Pleasant Police Department to be one of the finest in America, as evidenced by our accreditation reports. His professionalism and unwavering commitment to serving the citizens of Mount Pleasant is something we are truly thankful for and something we will undoubtedly miss. Harry is a great man and a top-notch police chief ? the finest. I am honored to call him my friend. We wish him the best as he pursues the next chapter in his life."
DeMoura also stated he feels the department possesses the in-house talent needed to fill the vacant position.
DeMoura indicated he would discuss selection for Sewell's replacement immediately with Mt. Pleasant Town Council.
"Our citizens must continue to be able to rely on the safety and security that they have long been blessed under the leadership of Chief Sewell," DeMoura added.
